There are some places that it wouldn't be a good idea to walk in at night, like don't attempt to walk between downtown and the Strip. It's too far anyway, but at night part of the way you run into some bad characters. If you are here as a tourist you probably won't venture off the Strip anyway, or if you go downtown take the bus or a cab. There are many cities in this country far more dangerous than Las Vegas, such as Washington, DC; New York City; Detroit; New Orleans; even Los Angeles. Las Vegas is no more dangerous than any other city this size.

I used to live in DC for a little while, imagine walking home through the sketchiest places at middle of the night And I've done that for like a year. I dare you to try it one day, after you visit Vegas of course.
If you are street smart then you won't have a problem. I'm sure the chances of getting shot in the middle of thousands of tourists are pretty non existent. Unless of course you venture off in the ghettos at middle of the night alone. But why would you do that anyway? Just keep with the crowds.
Carry your wallets in a safe pocket where It can't be reached. Don't carry all the cash, credit cards with you. Make sure you have an eye on all your things at all times.
Just the basic city rules.

Ok olecapt. I'll play along. You take a walk at midnight down Donna St., and I'll take a walk at midnight down E. Fremont (which I've done) or Sierra Vista where I used to work, and we'll see who lives through it. Ever heard of the Donna Street Crips? They'll kill you in broad daylight if they catch you on that street unless you're there to buy drugs.

If you rate by the fear quotient go for it. Generally big black dudes scare white people. However in Las Vegas the neighborhoods with the heavy crime ain't black. Not trying to make these north side neighbors nice...but they are simply factors of two or more safer than Sierra Vista and east Fremont. Crime in that area is white, hispanic and a little black. It is simply what the crime numbers say...
I am a big old dude and don't scare easily. So I feel reasonably comfortable on D or Donna or Freemont or Siera Vista though for good sense I would not walk any of the set after dark. Hell I would worry about doing a couple of blocks on Korval after the sun sets. I have and will agian show homes in some of the crudey neighborhoods. Sometimes that is the right place for what the client wants.

Good advice for most big cities where ever you go stay away from the lettered streets, such as A St, and sad to say stay off streets named after Martin Luther King.
Coming here to vacation you will be as safe as anywhere don't worry and enjoy your visit.

I was not trying to start an argument about what areas have higher crime rates. I was merely making the statement that Donna Street is THE most dangerous part of town because of the most dangerous gang in the country claiming it as "their" territory. So if olecapt has to always be right and outdo everyone, lets all agree that Sierra Vista is dangerous at night. In fact anywhere from Paradise to Eastern, and Sahara to Russell is dangerous at night, and sometimes even in daylight. And E. Fremont has always been a high crime area from Las Vegas Blvd. to Nellis Blvd., and Craig Road to Russell Road if you want to argue that. And the West Side has been a dangerous place since the shootout at the Kiel Ranch in 1884. I was just trying to ease the OP's mind about their trip. Those areas are old and have a lot of poor people in them which sometimes leads to crime. But as far as worry about crime ruining your trip, it's just best to enjoy your vacation and not worry about it. It's not as bad as it sounds when you read this crap. It's highly unlikely that you or 99.9% of the other 40 MILLION visitors this year will be involved in a crime or else none of this would last, and for sure we would have all these multi-billion dollar hotels going up all over the place.

Thanks for all the replies!
I am used of being in a city, I live in one. However, I'm not American, I'm from Europe (The Netherlands to be exact) and crime here is more spread out and your cities are as big as our provinces, lol. See, when I walk for 90 minutes here, I go from one side of the city to the other. And I heard that if I walk for 90 minutes in say Philly, I'm still in downtown philly. So it's kinda hard for me to get my head around that.
Last time I've been in the US was visiting my family in Atlanta and I was 9 years old. I'm 22 right now. And I have to say that I love the US, not only for a vacation, but the country in whole. The whole atmosphere etc.
Just for the record: There is NO European Dream. If there's one, it's called Paying taxes and filling out 8000 forms.
Crime here as I said is more spread out, my uncle in Philly told me that crime in US cities is more concentrated to certain areas and I'd recognize it immediately. However, I've heard stories here and there so I saw this website and saw that people here knew A LOT about Vegas When it comes to Philadelphia, I heard it's one of the worst cities in the US, however there I've got my uncle and rest of the family to show me around and draw me a map.
But in Vegas I'm on my own.
Well thank you for the link to the map! I'll certainly print it out and take it with me!
By the way, I take it that the Las Vegas Blvd is The Strip? Seems odd that the crime is the highest there... I've heard so much good stories about Vegas. Ah well, I'll certainly use my head

I noticed that 40 block (I believe that is what it is referred to as) never get's brought up. The Carey and Lake Mead area. I know that they are currently "revitalizing" it, but it has a pretty notorious rep as well and is in N. Las Vegas.
FWIW, I used to live on the east side of the strip and had a job delivering pizzas. I would make deliveries to Sierra Vista quite often and never ran into any trouble. I've also made a few deliveries into Naked City and surrounding areas and had no issues there either.
Back on topic, treat it like any other city. Be aware of your surroundings, try and stay in pretty public places, don't wander into dark alleys, etc., you'll be fine. No more crime than anywhere else, but all criminals are opportunists so don't give them the opportunity. Enjoy your visit.

The Las Vegas Strip is pretty safe I guess, unless you start getting mixed up with things like hookers or drugs. The tourist parts of Las Vegas are surrounded by slums, where a lot of the service workers live. There's no real reason to venture outside any of the tourist areas.
