i think las vegas is like almost any other city. they all have their ups and downs. i guess the only difference that stands out like a sore thumb is the fact that theres casinos almost anywhere you look. oh btw i live here. on a positive note, the part we moved to is a huge improvement to where i used to live (sylmar ca) the people here imo are generally friendlier ! obviously mentioned before, there are places that seem like total slums and have that "unsafe to walk at night" aura. jobs are also plentiful if youre not that picky. when we moved i found a job within a month and it helps payoff some monthly payments. overall, id say moving to vegas was probably 90% positive on my account.

Moved here from SoCal in '93. It has it's share of problems just like anywhere, but overall my family and I are happy to call Las Vegas home.

Ditto that. Vegas has been home since 1964, even though I was temporarily transferred away a couple of times. Seen lots of places, lived in a few of them. Only other place I could live now outside of Las Vegas would be Reno, NV, or Albuquerque, NM. Neither have the amenities of Las Vegas, but both have better weather, four seasons, and even better scenery.

I like it.
In some ways, living in Vegas is just like living anywhere else. In other ways, it's really very different (but in a good way). Overall, the pros outweigh the cons (which is usually the general consensus on here).
What to expect living in Las Vegas:
--Regular families, just like anywhere else. Adults work, kids go to school. There are lots of involved parents out here, and the suburban neighborhoods tend to have a nice community feel. Residential life in Vegas isn't just for families though; there is also a considerably large population of single 20-somethings.
--Hot, dry summers. Warm springs and falls. Mild (but slightly chilly) winters.
--A lot of Californians, and a good number of Midwesterners and New Yorkers. Plenty of ethnic and cultural diversity, and overall positive race relations (although, as in many cities, there is some self-segregation). Mixed political views.
--Lots and lots of restaurants scattered all over the valley. Plenty of golf courses. Lots of family-friendly (and dog-friendly!) parks. Plenty of movie theatres.
--Live entertainment available every night of the week on the strip. Be it a rock concert, a Cirque du Soleil performance, or seeing a comedian. But, really, most residents only hit the strip on occasion.
--Hiking, biking, boating, and skiing. For those who are interested.
--Frequent visitors.
--Oh, and you may have to walk through a casino to get to the next convention you attend or the next movie you go out to see.

I just moved back to Chicago from Vegas and I loved it there, im moving back as soon as I get a chance. As mentioned above there are so many things to do outside.
There are some places that are "scary" but its all in the eye of the beholder. I was told by people that have been living in Vegas for a while that the area where I lived (DI and Eastern) was "ghetto". I dont know what in the world they were talking about because the area was fine. So when people tell you some place is a bad area you have to take it with a grain of salt.
Car insurance is through the roof!

My Texas wife tells me that what passes for ghetto here in Vegas, in Houston would be a nice part of town. I've seen New York and Chicago ghettos too, and I have to agree with her. We really don't have any real ghettos in Las Vegas.

How long ago did you move there? The reason that I ask is I'm wondering if thejobs are still plentiful.
Thanks
