13 months later
My sons and I joined my husband here (job move) in Vegas 13 months ago. I was very nervous and excited about the move. We were from small town NE Ohio and Las Vegas seemed like a completely different world. Granted I had only ever been to LV twice before and had only seen the Strip.
Like all of you who are planning your move, I tackled every realtor site on the web and then found this site. What a find! Actual people who lived here and could answer my questions from 2500 miles away. I asked all of the same questions: where to live, good schools, etc.... Had my husband driving all over Vegas checking out neighborhoods and houses. I was convinced we were going to live in Green Valley. I even came out to visit my husband and we checked out houses down there. But we could never find the right mix. We wanted to be within "close" walking distance to a highly rated school on a nine month track, over 2000 sq ft, the house had to have a pool, 3 car garage, no postage stamp size lot, convenient shopping and the list could go on and on. On my searches I started venturing out, first by checking the schools and then the neighborhood. I found many nice areas on the west side such as Peccole Ranch, The Lakes and in the SW, Mountains Edge and Rhodes Ranch. We opted out of the new homes because the schools were overcrowded, year round and did not test well. HOA's in the other 2 communities were too high for my taste and some of them had 2 to pay. So then I turned my search onto Summerlin, as prices were finally starting to decline.
So after 4 months of online searching, we found the perfect home for us (everything from my list was met). Once we finally got the house (shortsale- not recommended if you are in a hurry to move) I got to know my new neighborhood even better online. I asked all sorts of questions, googled and of course planned my move. Before I got here, I knew my way around (the wonders of google earth), had my son all set up with a new Den for Cub Scouts and the scoop on the school from a mom. The power of the internet!! The only thing I missed was the mandatory Hep. A shot. We had to wait at a clinic for over an hour to get him that shot so he could start school the next day. Within a week of being here and talking to other moms I was suddenly on the PTA board for the next school year. Which I have thoroughly enjoyed and will be doing again next year.
What I am trying to say, home is what you make of it. Our lives haven't drastically changed since we moved to Sin City. My children are just as happy here as they were back in OH. We do miss some things and some things are different here. But so much is the same. As so many say, Vegas really isn't that different from anywhere else in the country.
So, 13 months later I can tell you that I have absolutely no regrets. Las Vegas is our home! ! Just wait till you wake up everyday and step outside to blue skies and mountains.

Nice post. Thanks for the balanced update on living in Vegas. Yes, sunny days sure are nice. My main memory of growing up in the midwest was the constantly grey, overcast skies, the humidity, and the flatness of the terrain. Anyway, thanks again.
