Considering a move from NYC to Las Vegas...
Hello everyone,
Sooooo......im a single 30 year old entertainment lawyer, born and raised in NYC. Have lived in NYC for most of my life, other than leaving for college and law school and feel very attached to the city. All my lifelong friends are here, a great business network, and I know the ins and outs of the city well. But part of me has an itch to try something new! I have a job I can take with me, so the job part is taken care of. I consider las vegas for a few reasons, its an entertainment center which is necessary for my line of work, I like the energy of the town (probably reminds me of NYC a bit), but the major factor is the cost of living/real estate. I'm at a point in my life where I would like to own a piece of property, and here in NYC that is quite difficult to do, even with a good salary. And if I was lucky enough to get into a condo, it would be a studio, probably no more than 500 square feet and Id pay 500k for it. In Vegas I know I can get a amazing home for that price or much less. I have a few friends who moved out to Vegas after college, some have stayed and planted some roots, while others have come back east after only a few years. So basically, I guess im trying to figure out if this is a wise decision. I feel if I stay in NY I won't progress as fast as I would like. But sometimes the artificial nature of vegas, the tourists, the glitter, and everything else that goes along with it acts as a deterrence. Im a city guy @ heart, but am trying to make a wise decision for my future. It would be very difficult to leave my NY roots, but maybe I can achieve some of the goals I have set for myself in Sin City. Hope to hear all your thoughts on this. Thank you for reading!

It's hard for others to say if this is a wise decision, when it's so personal. To your credit, you're well-positioned in your career and have thought this through carefully, which bodes well for your success.
I was thinking maybe you could rent for a year or two or however long it took for you to gauge whether you wanted to stay indefinitely and then decide. Would it be fairly easy for you to relocate back to NY (or other states where you're admitted) in case things don't work out in Vegas? If so, go for it! Good luck!

i understand you request for info, etc. but in the end (as i am sure you well know) this is your decision to make. if you have perused this site, you will quickly see that there are two very distinct camps of people who post here - those who like LV and those who do not. this raises two distinct possibilities:
a) this is a love it or hate it type of town
or
b) people with strong opinions take the time to post
personally, i think it is a bit of both....but probably more of the former. you sound like you are in a position where a change would be welcome. i say go for it.
worst case scenario (assuming you don't become a degenerate gambler, etc...which you pbby would have happened already if you were predisposed to that) is you, like some of your friends, won't like it here and you can move back east w/ a couple of stories of living in Las Vegas in your bag. best case, you like it and find a new home.
**since you are asking the opinions of strangers, i would strongly recommend checking the posts of people whose responses interest you...it'll give you a feel for where they stand on other issues, etc.
give you a summary on my views...i like it here both for the entertainment value of a city (bars, restaurants, stores) and the proximity to the great outdoors (spring mts, DVNP, lake mead, the colorado, canyon country, etc.)
best of luck.

so true, if you are a gambler, that could lead to serious problems...but please please don't change your field from an entertainment lawyer to a ambulance chaser type lawyer or a "walk away from your mortgage" lawyer.. i am so sick of the commercials

If you're single go for it, Vegas is awesome if you're single...
Is there a chance you could hang out with some of your alumni for a month before you take the plunge?

There's good business here for an entertainment lawyer?
Are you sure about that? Maybe if you plan to take a corporate salary and hook-up with one of the casinos, but I doubt you see 1/10th the deal flow that would be in NY or LA. It's mostly bigger names, with their own agents and lawyers, dealing directly with the casinos.
It's great you have some friends in town and, yeah, you can get a beautiful home for 500k.
I just encourage you to research that more. It's a short flight to LA, so maybe it can work for you. But I don't think you'll have a lot of direct business in Vegas. However, I think with your experience, law degree, and what I'd guess is a pretty good network that you could get a Director or VP of entertainment job at one of the casinos. But the approach would be to make some contacts and send resumes, maybe wait for an opening. Could be 6 months to a year or more, so I don't know if I'd come down here without a position.
Good opportunities down here for experienced, well educated people. But at the same time they are fewer and far between. They will bring you down for interviews and relocate you, so I wouldn't just pick-up and come down expecting to land a good gig.

I would agree with ClarkGriswold on this one. I can't imagine there is a large demand for entertainment attorneys out here. Aside from fight promotions (everythig from major boxing events to UFC) and Cirque de Soleil and other strip shows, I don't think there is really a whole lot of entertainment going on out here. I could be wrong here though, as it's not necessarily my area of expertise. There are quite a few celebrities, whether local, national, or international, that call Vegas home or maintain secondary residence out here so it may work on the networking front. There are a few musicians starting to come out of Vegas as well. Just do the research and make sure that it is the right thing to do. Good luck.

Whatever ya do.. get out of that god forsaken city.. lol
(I Speak from experience as an ex NYC resident who left in 1996)
Life will be so much more mellow and you will enjoy things that are either a) Illegal in NYC b) Overpriced in NYC or c) You just cant do in NYC.
Trust me.. it was one of the best moves I ever made in my life.
I burned all my metro cards and moved on in to NV.
BTW.. lol taxis don't work in Vegas like they do in NYC.. they wont stop for you if you hail a cab.. lol (ask me how I found out years ago lol)
