I've been to some 3rd world countries and you would almost have a heart attack on how they do construction. I've seen construction workers without hard hats and wear flip flops while they are constructing a sky scraper.!
I agree. I seen and read about the same thing you describe. A couple times a year my trade journals run some safety articles and they say just what you describe.

Years back when I lived in the San Jose area. There is this amusement park called Great America. They had a roller coaster ride called TOP GUN and it was one of those rides that your feet dangle freely. A Mexican man that doesn't read or speak English dropped his cowboy hat when he was on the ride. Then he went to get it and jump a chain linked fence that had warning signs not to enter. Well, he was hit by someones foot going about 70 MPH and died. The guy broke his leg from the impact.

Kind of off-topic, but I've got to ask- are they hiring 8th-grade dropouts to write the news in LV? If you read the article linked above, it sounds like something my 7 y/o could write- no flow, 5-word sentences, and things that don't even make sense.

"Union officials with the Southern Nevada Building and Construction Trades Council say they are more concerned with writing death benefits checks than continuing to work at unsafe job sites." Huh???

kimba - I don't think the strike is going to last for very long. They're pretty set on getting that building up ASAP, so they'll probably do whatever it takes to end the strike.

Yeah, I am sure you are right on there. We are use to things getting crazy at the jobsite. It is always something.

Do you guys think that the Construction site is really unsafe? or do you think these workers are taking risks to get the jobs done faster? Do you think there is drug and alcohol use on the job sites? Or even coming to work drunk or high. I think it also has to come down the the worker and his responsibility for his safety and his co-workers.

Let's put it this way- I find it extremely hard to believe that huge companies like Perini and Tischman (the owner's rep) don't have major safety programs in place that cover damn near every activity on that site- I work for a similar size company, and you can't take a leak without doing a pre-task planning meeting to confirm that you're going to pee safely. My best guess is that the long hours are beginning to wear on everyone, and stupid things are being done- not on purpose, but just as a result of the hours/fatigue. You can't have a safety guy watching over every single operation, and if the programs I mentioned weren't in place, you'd likely see many more deaths than have already occured there. Hell, the Venetian was around 1/10th the size of City Center, and I believe there were 5 or 6 people killed during that project (and safety programs weren't as strict even those few short years ago).

Yeah. Regulations on construction are STRICT, especially at major companies. I have a feeling that it's just mostly just individuals shortcutting around the safety regulations.
