Going to UNLV
Hey,
I visited Las Vegas last summer and liked the city, but fell in LOVE with the University. It seemed clean, had a good community of students, and it seemed like people actually take college serious here. I will eventually be going there possibly in a few months, but if not later on in my college years. My question is beyond the strip, are there "regular amenaties" that a student can go to? By that I mean going to Walmart, Target, the movies, etc. I know that Vegas is a 24 hour tourist town, but does a college student have to go to Planet Hollywood just to go shopping? LOL Is there life outside the strip? Gas prices and a car probably wont fit into my budget, so is public transpotation good as well? When I visited, the bus seem to run every 10 minues, but that was ON the strip...
*Oh yeah: If I do get accepted I will be going to school for Culinary Arts Management. I don't know if I'll want to stay in Las vegas post-graduation, but the cooking industry here seems fabulous and well paid!

There's a Target just north of Campus and a Walmart a little south, driving distance more than likely. The zip code is 89119 for the school so just use that and a store locater feature for all your inquiries. As for the nightlife, the sub 21 crowd can find plenty to do and the U and it's student body have organizations to direct your extra time and energy.
I'm fairly certain you will find plenty to do, especially if you're an outdoors type. They have a great outdoors club that offers plenty of adventures at reasonable prices.
Good luck to you.

My daughter just finished her freshman year @ UNLV. She was hardly ever on the Strip. There is plenty to do. Plenty of places to see. Lots of affordable shopping. There are also loads of local kids that will invite you to their homes and show you around the area. My daughter almost chose to go to Johnson and Wales in Rhode Island.....boy is she glad she chose UNLV!!! She can't wait to get back there......

My children want to go to UNLV...but their site says a student must have a GPA of 3.5 to be accepted.
Is that true? And what about those 'average' students who desire higher education....where do they go to get degrees?
My 17 year old wants a degree in Hospitality Management. And my 18 year old...well, she's back and forth on things...not decided.

Not at all. In fact, they can attend with close to a full scholarship with a 3.25, I believe (isn't that the current cut-off for the Millennium scholarship?).
And diva: living in Las Vegas really isn't all the different from living anywhere else.

Hi Diva!
Shops close to UNLV-
Target- almost across the street on Maryland and Flamingo
Wal-Mart- somewhat close- on Tropicana and Pecos (not walking distance)
The Boulevard Mall- Maryland Pkwy (would not walk in the summer but, close)
Best Buy- next to the mall on Maryland (same as above)
You are also close to restaurants, one of my faves:
Metro Pizza- Tropicana between Maryland and Spenceralso:TGI Fridays
Applebees
Red Lobster
Hofbrauhaus
this list can go on and on
You are also very close to the strip.
an FYI- Vegas has a lot to do outside of the strip. We are a city just like anywhere else. It's not just about casinos and gambling.
We also have Lake Mead, Red Rock Canyon, Mt Charleston and many parks.
When you arrive try venturing out a little, you'd be surprised.

Thanks guys, but I don't know if I will be moving there soon now. I realized that it will cost me nearly $30,000 a year. I want to transfer out of state, but not be in debt the rest of my life....Im only a 2.5 GPA because I didn't really try hard and was seriously unhappy here at my own home state, but I think I wanted to go to vegas because of the CITY LIFE rather then getting my degree.

Do you live in a western state right now? If so, you might be able to qualify for the Western Undergraduate Exchange. Go ahead and look it up...it's a nice deal.
You could also look at local culinary schools, which may end up being more affordable.
