Default Moving from Detroit To Las Vegas

Hi,

I am 30 (no kids), and I am going to be moving to the Las Vegas area this fall with my boyfriend and was hoping that I could get some info on the area. I have read some negative stuff regarding gang activity and such, but I am keeping in mind that I am coming from Detroit. Although I live 30 minutes outside Detroit, I work right in the heart of detroit. Having lived here all my life I feel very at ease here, although I know there are certain places not to go. Anyway, What I am most concerned with is finding a safe area to live in. I will be renting an apartment so that is my number one question...

Where are some good places to rent from (Suburb area)?

What is a typical electric bill for apartment renters in the summer?

How hard should I expect my job search to be?
I am a bartender with 10 years experience and a newly licensed hairdresser

Are there any places that I should avoid for safety's concern?

Or any general advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated....

Las Vegas really isn't all that dangerous. Especially when compared to Detroit.

I've lived here for a long time and have never felt one bit unsafe. As long as your apartment isn't in a bad area, you'll be fine. Avoid the more central areas of town, as well as parts of northeast Las Vegas. Everywhere else should be fine. The nicest/safest areas include Summerlin, Anthem / Green Valley, Centennial Hills, and the newer southwest corners of town.

I'm partial to the SE side to town. Henderson "proper", Green Valley, Anthem. Traffic is much better and the infrastructure is builtup way more than say Southern Highlands. You do, however, pay a premimum in the SE side of town versus the NW.

My 1200 sqft condo can run upwards of 200 in the summer. I do have a lot of stuff plugged in though to include 2 fridges and 2 wine chillers. But keep in mind the 3 months of high electric bills are followed by 9 months of low bills and only 1 or 2 months of doubled gas bills (70 vs 35) the rest of the year.

Everything is a little harder now. I'd line up a job before I moved 2000 miles, but that is just me.

Sure there are generic places. No different than any other big city. My rule of thumb for people that ask me are avoid MLK and any street with a "number". However there are other area to avoid.

Hope that helps. Welcome to vegas if you decide to come.

Lol. Agreed on the letters. That said, MLK is the quickest way for me to get to Aliante and my wine storage unit so I often drive on it. I never feel unsafe, but as with any city there are unsafe spots. That is what I was trying to address with my generalization.

Google Zip Code 89106 - Washington/I-15

That map provides great places to avoid. However, I find myself there often. I know a lot of people that teach at Rancho HS, I find myself at baseball games and my church is in that map as well.
