Default Things to do in Nevada outside of Las Vegas

I haven't looked to see if this has been done in the Nevada threads, but this might be interesting. Let's start with the Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko.
There was a fund raiser here in Las Vegas the other night.

ReviewJournal.com - News - JANE ANN MORRISON: Sweet stanzas about cowboy culture the reward for long ride to Elko

Default Elko

Lots of other stuff to do in Elko. Click here then on "attractions", "events", etc.

Elko Convention and Visitors Authority, Elko Nevada

and: 2008 National Cowboy Poetry Gathering

The gathering is a real hoot.

Outside of Las Vegas? Well...I don't know much about activity in the northern part of the state, but I can recommend other trip destinations within short driving distance.

-The Primm Outlet Mall. The place is huge...it's a fun stop if you're on your way to or from CA (it's located right on the state line).

-Zion Canyon. Technically in Utah, but within short driving distance of Las Vegas. It's a pretty neat place. Lots of cool rock formations. Great hiking. I always see lots of shooting stars when I'm there. Different enough from Red Rock Canyon to make it worth the trip.

-Big Bear. Really nice lake/mountain area. Water sports in the summer, skiing in the winter, and hiking year round. Great old-fashioned shopping village. Only a few hours away. Different enough from Mount Charleston to make it worth the trip. I love it there.

Actually...come to think of it, Lake Tahoe! This is the only northern NV spot I can comment on - it's absolutely lovely! One of the most beautiful places in the country, I'd wager to say. The only thing is...it's like an 8 or 9 hour drive, so you'd probably want to fly.

OK, Zion is good, as are Big Bear and Lake Tahoe, but what about events? Has anyone ever gone to Jim Butler Days in Tonopah or the mountain bike race in Austin?
