I am also moving to Vegas next month. I am a consultant, and can live basically anywhere in the Western United States. I chose Las Vegas because of the climate, entertainment options, and housing affordability (among other things). All of your questions have been answered in past threads. I think the locals are getting sick of answering the same questions over and over again. Use the search tools, and you'll find answers to everything you are asking.
Before moving, make sure that you take a long (1-2 week) visit to Las Vegas and stay somewhere away from the strip. Rent a car, and drive around to all of the areas mentioned on the threads. Get a feel for the areas. Las Vegas is A LOT more than just the strip... In fact, most locals don't spend a lot of time on the strip.
Good luck!

I lived quite a few different places in Vegas. I'm currently up in Elko. Vegas is nice. Summers can be oppressive. I could go for weeks or months and never get anywhere near the strip. It's large enough to develope it's little communties with their own grocery store and shopping, and the strip and tourists are a world away.
Some days I kinda miss it. Almost. But if I can answer a question, message me... I don't mind.
