Here's some advice: Try to get a more positive outlook. Your kids will pick up on your negativity and will have a harder time adjusting to the move. The AFB is on the NE side of town - it's not the best part of town to raise a family, but not terrible either. You could move to the areas further west, like Aliante, for a more family friendly environment and higher ranking schools if you don't mind the commute. Most importantly, you need to embrace the move since you seem to not have a choice. Las Vegas is just like anywhere else in a lot of ways, so if you remain positive, your kids will do the same and before long they'll have new friends and so will you.

I'm raising my kids here and they seem to be just fine. I had fears and read bad things before I got here but I also read many encouraging things too. I have been here a little over a year and I can tell you I am quite happy to call Las Vegas my home.
From my understanding, the areas surrounding the base are not that desirable. Many people that work at the base commute from different areas in the Valley. Up north there is Alliante, to the northwest there is Summerlin, Centennial, Lone Mountain, Peccole Ranch and to the southeast there is Henderson/Green Valley.
Where you will find the better schools are in the Northwest and Green Valley.

ohh i havent shared my anxiety with my kids ofcourse, nothing but good things we have talked about, i just secretly have a fear. lol i know they would take on the same fear if they saw me worry about it..so i dont let them see that. we should be able to live on base since we have a handicapped child, gives us priority in the house waiting list...so thats one good thing, i know theres a school on base. i couldnt live far from base even if i had to live offbase due to having only one car now, and hubby would be taking that to work, so will have to be close by or on base there. i just worry about the crime of the place really...and this being our first PCS besides tech makes it harder...very long way from home =)

Having a positive attitude will make the experience much better. If you come in dreading it, you're guaranteed to be unhappy here. Just find things to look forward to.
I wouldn't recommend living near the base. It's a more dangerous part of town and the schools aren't as good (even a school on the base wouldn't be ideal, because your kids would have a hard time making long-term friends).
Traffic around the valley isn't too bad, so I'd suggest living somewhere else and commuting. Henderson and the northwest corner would be better. You could probably find a carpool (there are TONS of military families all over town).

Hello Stoneking80!
If you haven't already done so, contact the base Housing Office ASAP. My husband is also getting ready to PCS to Nellis in September, and we just visited the area last week to search for a house. Our first stop was the Housing Office, and they were SOOOO incredibly helpful with all sorts of relocation information. We met three different women who worked in the office (can't remember their names) and all were extremely knowledgeable about on and off base rentals, and will be able to answer any questions you might have. They also have a number of different brochures covering just about any topic you need regarding your move to the area.
Good luck!

Stay positive, brand new housing is be built now at Manch Manor some have already moved in to the new housing. Vegas isn't so bad neither is Nellis, on the positive side your orders say Nellis and not Creech.

Hi....that's one of those things...roll with the punches when it comes to the military.
I moved to Nellis 2 weeks ago.
Eagle Trace Apartments Eagle Trace Home Page
is where I chose to live. It's right across the street from the main gate....can't get any closer than that!
The youth center is in the backyard of Eagle Trace but you have to go 2 blocks, hang a left, and go down Range Road...then the left at the RV park. I see the Youth Center from my balcony.... my kids go there and have a blast!
So many say it's not a great place to raise children....but I've lived many, many places and this has been the best 2 weeks for my family. We stay close to base and don't venture out into the city of Vegas often. Our church is up the road and the LDS temple is just a tad up Nellis Blvd.
We couldn't be happier!
Gas is cheaper here than alot of places I've lived; however, it's still $4.25 or so a gallon. This is one of the reasons I selected Eagle Trace...you can get a 2 bedroom for $776 a month (that is with your military discount) AND waive the deposit and admin fees AND 1/2 off your first months rent.
The schools are vast and you aren't locked into a zone as many may think. I thought that. But there are many semi-public schools that you can select....they even have one online. Boy, things have changed!

Boo F'ing Hoo. Anytime the military sends you to a descent location with your family you should be thrilled. Consider back to back 14month deployments in harms way before singing your sad tune. Nothing more annoying that a whinny and ungrateful SERVICE member or spouse - and don't forget that it's an all volunteer military. You could easily make your families life much more pleasant by embracing the move and focusing on the positive. It's time to grow up.
