I've always liked referring people to schoolmatters.com. Easy to use for the test score rankings if that means anything.

I grew up in No Va and they are in for a shock school wise. No Va (Fairfax County) has some of the best schools in the United States.

So does part of Las Vegas. Summerlin and parts of Henderson can run with Fairfax County. And there is no place in Las Vegas as bad as DC...

So what about those things that aren't reflected in test scores. What about schools that have great media and arts programs, extracurricular activities, buildings that are kept up nicely, teachers that like their jobs, etc. I agree greatschools is a good website, but there's a lot of the story you can't always get there. Not everyone logs on to give their opinions on a website like that.

I am trying to find out similar information also Just in case we move... We are trying to find good schools and then locate housing around that. I was checked out the school rankings website but I don't know the area well enough to know where they are located. Anyone know anything about Gerehime? Givens? They came up as 10 rated schools. Just curious.. Are they in the centennial hills area? Anyone know anything about this area? Is there good schools in Summerlin? Where we are now my son's school is rated a 6 ( I think-- could be lower) and yet we would give it a ten. You never know..

Thanks..

Tina

Hi!

I just moved here from MI. I did do a post on my thoughts on the school that my daughter goes to-Coronado, 9th grade-so you can look for that.

But, I feel the same way you do about the rating. In MI her school was ranked a 7, I believe, and I thought it would have been a ten too. Now, Coronado is rated a 10 and I see why. Frankly, the ratings are only a guideline since all the districts are so different in how they test and what they require. I think anything above a 6 would be good.

Definitely true, and usually you get a lot of disgruntled people logging on to complain. People who are satisfied don't always think to give praise, unfortunately.

What grades are you looking at? They do have good magnet schools that specialize in the extra things such as; arts, media, science...There are certain criteria you have to have to get in, I believe.

See my above post for more info-I just moved here from MI too

Default School District

Northern Virginia does have very good schools, however we are all settled in in Summerlin and we really like it. Our girls go to Linda Givens Elementarty and they were very helpful from the administration to the teachers. We experienced absolutely no red tape. The only hassle was getting Hep. A shots for the girls, but other than that no problems at all. The girls are enjoying the school and making new friends. Givens is ranked in the top 5 best elementary shcools in Nevada.
