I would like to knw what the norm is for temp to hire. I am at a company that wants to hire me perm. The agency is asking for $10,000 for a receptionist position. Company is not going to pay that and will consider letting me work 720 hours to work out my contract. Is the dollar amount and the 720 hours normal?

$10,000 seems extremely high. That's saying the agency is making over $13.00 an hour for your services and I doubt that is true. But there could be a penalty clause. The 720 plus time served is probably six months, and that sounds reasonable. Who is telling you this, the agency or the employer? Maybe someone is full of it. What does your contract with the agency say? I'm sure you must have signed something. I think that most people just continue working through the contract before going permanent.

From my experience when we hired temp to perm the fee was based on a percentage (20%)of the annual salary ie: a 40k a year temp to perm hire would cost us $8,000. Additionally when we hired hourlies the mark up was HUGE. We paid the agency their rate at $24.00 an hour and the temp would see like $11 an hour.

Then the $10,000 or 720 hours is probably correct wouldn't you say?

Yeah more than likely. Thats one expensive receptionist.

Yes they can be. When I was an Office Manager, we would sometimes go though an employment agency due to the fact that sometimes you got better people. We had a hard time getting people with a decent work history. Also they take care of all the paperwork. All you as a company has to do is sign off on a time card.

The thing that sucks for the secretary is that if the company does offer health insurance, and they do not buy out her contract, she will not be able to get insurance until 90 days that she is officially employed with the company.
