I'm in a small town now, and I miss having access to things I had in Vegas such as a good dependable yoga studio that always had students, the nearby colleges to take classes (for fun) at my convenience, Spanish food, 24 hour everything, jobs in more industries, good hair salons, etc. However, all those things can be found in any real city, and, in my opinion, they're much better in other places.

I am hoping to be able to move to a bigger, better city in the near future, so I can have all the things I liked in Vegas but with better quality. Vegas is lacking a sense of community, and I fear for my family's safety (the drivers, my mother living alone, my sister wasn't in the best of neighborhoods but I was able to get her out). I'm not ecstatic about where I live now, but I pray everyday that I never end up back in Vegas!
You see? That is how it is. They hate the place and move out.

And they almost always give absurd reasons...bad drivers being a classical example. I have driven extensively in the east and so CA. I have driven extensively in Europe. I have driven extensively in Mexico. We do not have bad drivers in Las Vegas. Just is not so. Now are they the best most polite drivers in the world? Well no. There are better...in general the southern CA drivers for instance. But there are a lot worse...Boston or Washington DC as examples of scarey places.

And then a bigger better city...lots of luck. There are bigger cities. There are better cities...but there are no bigger and better cities.

The Lady across the street is a native. She likes rural Utah. But comes back to Vegas every month or so to keep sane.

All the native cowboys that used to live out here are moving to Pahrump or New Mexico. Land has gotten too dear for them. Or perhaps the riding rink has gotten too valuable to just sit there.

I will stick to my geducken definition of a native. Once you are senior to half the population you are one...

Glad you moved out and found someplace you like better in Southern California. Wow, talk about crazy drivers and roadways, you'll find them there as well, LOL!!!

I also hope you were finally able to rent out your condo here and that the problem with Nevada Power you were having is resolved. You never came back on that thread and let anyone know how Nevada Power fixed the issue.

Best of luck to you in your search for a new place to call home!

Come back and visit once in a while when you want to have some fun!

Well, I can say after being in Oklahoma for five years due to the military I don't have one complaint about my hometown My mom was infact born in Las Vegas in '54 so if you want to know anything about anything you would want to ask someone like her. I've been all over the world and all over the US and I can safely say Las Vegas is great, especially compared to some of the holes I've been to. I met a blackjack dealer in Fallon earlier this year was born and raised in Las Vegas and turns out she may have known my mom, she was a little older, but went to the same high school, said she, "I came to Fallon because I couldn't stand Las Vegas anymore." I'm guessing she liked it before all the people came.

I have an elderly friend of mine...he came to live here when he was an infant...his Dad worked on Hoover Dam, lived in Boulder City for a while and moved to Las Vegas in the mid thirties.

He has told me stories of the place the way it was back then. Horses tied to hitching posts along Fremont Street....absolutely no air conditioning...EVERYBODY knew everybody.

Wonderful stories to me, simply the way it was back then to him.

He doesn't mind the growth of the city...takes it in stride as a "oldie Las Vegan" he calls himself... He STILL loves it here.

Olecapt, my reason for moving away is not the drivers; that's just one of the things that sickens me about the city. The reason I moved from Vegas to another version of Vegas (except with nothing to do) is that I got married, and my husband has a better job here than I did there. He also convinced me that we'd be living a lot closer to a major city than we actually do, grrrr. I don't like Southern California in general, it's pretty much the same as Vegas to me. San Diego is the only place I'd voluntarily move down here. I've also driven in many other places, and Vegas is still horrible to me. The drivers may not be great in those locales, but at least there's a method to the madness. Vegas drivers seem to have the intent to kill. They don't compare to drivers in Mumbai, but just because India is worse does not make Vegas good.

There are plenty of bigger, better cities for me. New York, Chicago and Madrid come to mind first. I like walkable places with lots of culture and easy access to the things I want. The housing may be more expensive, but it's worth it to me to have everything I love at my doorstep and never have to drive again. Plus, for my line(s) of work, those places have much better opportunities for me, although Vegas was a good place to get into the industries I like as a beginner. I don't think Vegas is the worst city in the world, but there are very few places I have less of a desire to live in (such as Miami, yuck!).

MomMom, I don't necessarily like my new home any better than Vegas! Although, being a small town, the locals are actually much friendlier as drivers, and the traffic isn't too bad. I find myself acting like the jerk driver since I'm used to being screwed over and fighting traffic. Everyday in Vegas, self-important SUV drivers blocked my view, so I couldn't get out of any location, whereas here, if they notice my struggle, they actually back up so I can see. Shocking!

As far as Nevada Power, I did post that we were just going to pay the bill, but after that post, the tenant decided to sign up for new service online, NP called and confirmed it and never mentioned the balance due, and everything turned out fine without anyone paying that balance. The in-laws no longer speak to us. Darn.

I do come back as often as possible since my family is still in Vegas! I get to visit all my favorite ethnic restaurants since all we have here is Mexican, Italian and Chinese (very good Mexican, Italian and Chinese, but it gets old). My husband and I go out to clubs with old friends, even though we're getting too old for the scene, and we usually find a really cheesy room in an older hotel like the Sahara, just for fun. Be back in a few weeks for San Gennaro!

Same here and everywhere we have lived they complain about the traffic (except Altus, OK - don't know lv if you are at Altus or Lawton). I think it just comes down to our society. There are more dual income families these days leading to more cars on the road which causes longer rush hour which causes lower patience. We are all in such a hurry to get where we are going that road rage is an epidemic everywhere in the US.

If you want to see some crazy drivers try driving in Paris or Rome or the autobahn in Germany can be scary at times.

I was born in Manhattan and went to Manhattan College. Spent most of 15 years in upstate. I know a lot about NY and NYC. And about Chicago and about London though not Madrid.

These are big cities. They are for big city lovers. I can exist in one but never be happy there. They are not anything like a southwestern US city. I have a daughter in love with NY/Boston/San Francisco. Bops around from one to another. I think she is crazy.

Rural CA is for retirees. No one else should live there except perhaps someone into growing stuff. Though note you can grow stuff like mad in Vegas...just add water.

And you are still nuts on the driving thing. Vegas has an exceptionally nice freeway system and great boulevards. It is simply one of the better auto cities.

If you got enough money you can get by in NYC without a car. Even after 40 years elsewhere I am right at home. But if you think they are good drivers you simply have never been on the cross bronx or the LIE. Find someone from long island. They will tell you about bad traffic. Or someone who uses the major Chicago freeways. Or try to get to Heathrow anytime of the day...

Glad it worked out for you Martian, but sorry about the inlaws. You know the old saying, "you can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family"

Find happiness and keep well!

Or the guy from Ronkonkoma who was having a bad heart attack and prayed to die quickly so that for once in his life he would not have to change trains at Jamaica?
