I've been getting some conflicting stories about obtaining a sheriff's card. Some people tell me that I need to have an employer willing to vouch for me to get one. Others tell me that all I need to do is go down to the sheriff's dept. and take a test and pay a fee.

All in all it seems like a Catch 22 if you're trying to get into a gaming establishment. They want you to have the card, but the only way to get one is to have a place hire you.

Thanks!

You do not have to have an employer vouch for you. You just go apply and hand over some bucks.

There is no need to get one until you get a job that requires it. You will also need to get fingerprinted. If you work in food service you'll need a health card too, and if you serve alcohol you'll need a TAM card. To have all this paid for by JobConnect you'll need to get a form from them to take to the employer to fill out. That might be what your friend was referring to.

Yes, we could only pay for work cards for full time employment. That's the purpose of the form. If 30 hours is considered full time then JobConnect can pay for it...IF...you are a Nevada resident, and IF you can prove you can legally work in this country. So you will need a Nevada DL or ID and a SS card. If an immigrant, you must have an up to date green card. You must also be unemployed at the time of application, so if you start work before you go to JobConnect you won't be helped. We could also pay for certain other things, such as uniforms, work shoes, tools, etc., even some schooling/training programs. Things may have changed a little bit but that is generally the rule of the CEP (Claimant Employment Program ... it was originally for unemployment claimants to help them find work, but even if you're not eligible for unemployment, but out of work, they'll help you is they can).

Default What would cause denial?

If you had been convicted of a felony 20 years ago (when the War on Drugs made all possesion a felony) , but it was expunged and sealed, are you still eligible for a gaming card/licence? They say that you no longer have to list it for job apps, but what about police background checks? Just wondering for a freind of mine.

a sheriffs card used to be required for ALL casino/hotel workers

A TAM card is the Alcohol Awareness card required to serve liqour

A health card is required for ALL food and beverage workers.

Sheriffs cards are no longer required except for people directly involved in Gaming...i.e. dealers, marketing people, slot attendants etc etc.
Most hotel personnel do not have to have a Sheriffs card. It is essentially a semi background check.....I personally wish it were still required for everyone.....we might have been alerted to a potential problem in our recent past.

In room reservations and being a hostess, my mother and grandmother required Sheriff's cards as well. It was a thing - near gambling = Get a Sheriff's card. To work for Williams Gaming, to come into the casino to install machines, my ex had a Sheriff's card as well. And...a housekeeper at Mirage also had to get one - Culinary Union sent her to get one. Basically, hotel jobs, from what I gathered meant obtain a Sheriff's card.
