North Las Vegas is Great! You do have to avoid parts of it. I have lived here for about 7 years and love it!

Default moving

My husband and I are moving to las vegas and would like to move somewhere not too far from Nellis AFB. We don't know Las Vegas that well and would like to know which neighborhoods to look in. We have little kids, none in school for a bit, and a dog. We also want to find a home, not an apartment or condo. Any suggestions and why?

North Las Vegas is a great area for AFB people. The commute is about 15 to 20 minutes, will be less when the finish the work on Craig. I have a 3 year old, and there are a lot of parks to take the kids to. The rent is not too bad for single family homes.

in fact, i have a colleague (currently lives down on warm springs) who has started looking around my neighborhood for when her lease is up as she really likes it here also.

gj, I couldn't agree more.

Unfortunately, I've accepted a job in the Seattle area and will be heading up there next month, leaving you as the lone resident/defender of downtown on this forum! Good luck!

I will have disagree about the commute time. I work at the base and with all the constuction at Craig at I-15 it provides a 15-20 wait just to get over the freeway at 5pm on workdays. If you take the alertnative - Range Road to CC215 then it is a mess as well.

I have a lot of coworkers that live in Aliante and it takes them 25-30 minutes to get home (Ann/Allen)... Other coworkers live in the NW (Durango/95) and it takes them 30/35. The problem with 215 is that if there is an accident it backs up.

It is a consistant 30 minutes from north green valley to Nellis AFB.

That said, at all costs avoid the southwest. I had a coworker move down to Warm Springs/Durango and it consistantly took him over 50 minutes to get to and from work and some days that pushed upwards of 90 minutes (accident).

That said, rent/housing prices are much cheaper in NLV than GV. As always YMMV.

With the construction it takes a while, but I have not been that way in a long time! Sorry!

You can also take Craig to lamb and them take the 15 to the 215.

Either way, unless you live in the North East, you are screwed. But I personally would take the 20 to 30 minutes to almost an hour.

BUGBILLY agreed. I was just pointing out that Henderson and Green Valley are just as far from the base - time wise. Also, I'm not so sure anymore, but after the widening of US95 out west I was hearing that Summerlin was only a 25-30 minute drive (vice 45 minutes before)... but with the new construction on I-15 at Lake Mead I'm not sure if that is true anymore.

There are local routes that mostly get around the Craig/15 problem. I flatly don't believe a half hour reliably from Henderson. Depends on where. Up in parts of Anthem takes 15 minutes to get to eastern and 215. If everything works and you may the lights you might do half an hour.

Also completely dependent on 95 and sometimes on 215. If the 95 215 intersection has problems you can be there half a day.

And when you get off the FWY there is no "good" route.

From North Green Valley, running Nellis Blvd all the way up from Russell it is 30 minutes.

From Eastern/215 (where a coworker lives) he says 30 minutes on the way to work and 35 home.

After you get off the freeway it isn't bad at all. Get off on Charleston, go west to Nellis and then north. Nellis lights are timed great. Between Sams Town (where I get on it) and the base I hit 2 light (sometimes 3). DI, Charleston for about 10 seconds (don't count that one), Lake Mead and sometimes Cheyenne.

Going home when I leave the base (I street gate) I normally can be down by Sam's town within 12-13 minutes (on a 8 mile drive).

And you can beleive a half hour realibily. I have been doing it for 3 years, my dad has been doing it for 15+ years.

That said, I agree if you were up in Anthem it would be 45+ minutes.

Also, where are the local routes that get around Craig and I-15? If I want to get to the Cannery from the base how long would it take at 445pm?
