I have searched the threads and have found so much helpful information, but thought I would throw our specifics out there to see if anyone had any recommendations for us.
My husband and I - late 20s will be relocating from Ohio to Las Vegas. We want to buy a house in the low 200's. (looking for 1600-2000 sq. ft. 3 bdrm)
We do have 2 large dogs, so a bit of a "yard" would be preferred.
Would love to be in a community with a pool and where we could meet new people.
Safety and cleanliness in my opinion are the most important factors. (but a pool is a close second
I would say we are an average middle class family - as in we don't need the best there is (b/c we know we couldn't afford it), but desire a nice, safe, clean community with a community feel and some nearby action would be great too. (retail, entertainment, etc).
As of now our top 5 areas are:
Green Valley/Henderson
Summerlin (But not sure we can afford the kind of house we would want)
Mountain's Edge
Providence
Southwest
What are your thoughts? Are we looking in the right areas?
Thanks in advance for your input! It would be very much appreciated and valued!

Which part of Ohio? My BIL lives in Marion with his family which is a nice town.
Our RE expert Olecapt will help out best with your questions; however, have you looked at the northwest or Aliante? The only issue that I see you may have is I don't know of a community with a pool, we use the YMCA on Buffalo which is very nice. The lots in the NW are definately big enough for the dogs, and there are tons of foreclosures in the area where you might be able to get the right price point.

The Courts in Aliante has a pool. Pets are accepted here as long as they do not bark constantly. The townhomes have yards for the 2 of the 3 units of each building. The neighborhood within the Courts is very active, lots of singles, families and older people. A good mix. And 3 parks all within walking distance along with shopping and our new casino very soon.

Of the 5 communities that you listed along with your criteria, I would say Summerlin, Green valley, and the southwest (Rhodes Ranch area) in that order would be best suited for your wants. Mountain's Edge is pretty distant from everything, and traffic and infrastructure seems to be a bit of an issue out there currently. Providence (and keep in mind that I am actually partial to the NW as I live out this way) is one of the newest master planned communities in the Vegas Valley, and the timing of the project was absolutely horrible, IMO. I know for a fact that for awhile construction was halted on at least a few of the subs up there. However, shopping and dining on this side of town is adequate as is entertainment. However, I feel that Summerlin, Green Valley, and Rhodes Ranch have the NW trumped on dining, shopping, and entertainment as well as being closer to everything in town. Keep in mind though that in the neighborhoods that are a bit farther out you will find better value for your homebuying dollar. If you do venture to the NW, try the east side of US95 in 89143 or 89131. Most of the homes around here seem to have lots that are a bit larger than average.
We are finally moving to LV in Oct and will start looking for housing. Realistically, what is the travel time between Summerlin and Green Valley during peak traffic? My better half won't work but I have to make the commute every weekday.
I, also, strongly suggest renting first. We came from Michigan and rented the first year. It is just so different out here than the mid-west that there is no way to know exactly where you want to end up until you are here for awhile. We rented in Summerlin, ended up buying in Aliante and just a few months ago we moved back to Summerlin, mainly due to gas prices and commute times. We are renting our house in Aliante, didn't want to sell just yet because it really is our "dream home" but just couldn't handle the long commute to where we needed to be.
Honestly, until you are here and lived for awhile you won't really know what area is going to be the best for what your needs are.

I don't know 5Kings...you sound like an ad for not renting at all or renting permanently...
