Best area in Vegas for someone like me
I'm nearing the end of my research I think. I've been to Vegas twice and went completely alone on my last visit. I drove all over and really liked The District area. I had the best clam chowder in my life there and chatted up with very friendly people. I went to see Sex and the City the day it opened and chatted it up with a woman who just sat next to me in the movies. I'm wondering where I would like living. I like to frequent the public library, will most likely be joining a book club and would be looking for that and a local writers club. I like to eat out a lot and like shopping in big supermarkets. The mall was fine although I don't consider myself a mall rat. I'll be moving as a recent divorcee with a wheelchair using teen. I speak Spanish and will be looking for a job within 20 minutes of where I live. How many more trips should I take to check things out? I'm applying for my teaching license now. I'm a baby boomer (56) who feels 28 after I take my Aleve and do my yoga stretches. Any ideas of where I should try living on a teacher's salary?

Do you have an idea how much you want to pay per month? Do you plan on renting or buying?

Where did you find friendly people in Henderson? Anyhow....there are plenty of teaching oppportunities anywhere here in the valley. Getting one is not as easy as advertised unless you are an unlicensed Philippine teachers aid wanting to come to the states. They are flying them in here under the guise of a teacher shortage. But ask any experienced teacher applicant what they are told whey they apply.
I admire your young outlook on life. There is plenty here to do to keep busy. Sounds like your looking to start life over again free of the past. I dont know of any specially large Libraries as they are all average. Maybe the one on Desert Inn near Durango? The main one on Flamingo near Maryland Pkwy might be the largest. I never heard of a book or writers club. You like to eat out a lot so there will be no shortages of choices...thats for sure. The District alone has dozens of choices.
There are no big supermarkets here. We just have crappy ol Vons, Albertsons and Smiths. Just average nothing special food stores all over priced. With the size of this city one would wonder when we will get a Hannafords or Harris Teeters or even Kings, all are the grand daddys of supermarkets with full child care centers and cafes and dinners cooked to order and a full international foods section. You do have the old stand by Whole Foods across from the District and many including yours truely go there for dinner or lunch some times. Well maybe more times then I care to admit anyway.
Can you tell me where you got that clam chowder? Was it New England or Manhattan Clam Chowder?

The chowder was at the King's Fish House in The District. I don't remember if it was Manhattan or New England. Sorry. Thanks for the info.

I plan to rent at first. If I can find a 2 bedroom 2 bath for under $1000 that would be good. I've seen some places that my age would get me into for way under that. It hurts to admit it but I qualify to live there.

Do you mean the 55+ Heck age is only a number. Live where it is cheaper for you. Besides "older" people Rule!!!
I feel young too (except when I try to play tennis for 2 hours then hum oh well a few aches) Do you mean the District in Henderson??? Just trying to find out where you are talking about. Vegas I found out has Whole Food Markets which are wonderful.

It is marginally possible to live on a teachers salary in Henderson. Tough close to the district. Maybe a small rental but that is it. If you wish GV you need to move across the freeway to the older sections to the north and west of the district. It is still tough.
Economically you should head to the far NW or NLV. Rent or buy is much less expensive. Nice new and shiny though. Schools are reasonable if you stay in Shadow Ridge or Arbor View.
If you wish to live comfortable even on a relatively senior teachers salary the south side is too expensive.
