I think I know about the summer heat in Vegas (typically around 115?) but have never been there in the fall and winter.

How harsh are your winters? Just curious if I should pull out my woolens and overcoats. How long does winter last? Does it really snow in Vegas?

Do any of you take earthquake insurance, flood insurance or any special insurance to protect your home other than the typical.

I keep hearing about flash floods over there and just curious.

Winters can get pretty cold, but that is all relative to where you are coming from. We do see snow occasionally but not much and it's usually isolated to higher elevation (Summerlin, Anthem, Black Mountain, etc.) areas. It definitely can get around and sometimes below freezing though.

Earthquakes do happen out here, but they are rare (I've lived here for 15 years and felt one). You will not require flood insurance unless you are in a flood zone, and I don't believe you can even get it unless you are. Clark County has really stepped up the flood control but the flash floods do still happen.

chances are, if you already own woolens and an overcoat, you will also have use for your bikini in the winter

Winter is mild. Because it is the desert, nighttime temps will be cold and you will want to put on a winter jacket to be comfortable. But daytime temps are comfortable and a spring jacket will usually suffice.

There is occaisionally a light flurry or dusting of snow. You won't ever be shoveling snow off your driveway, but some early mornings you may have to scrape some frost off the car.

We have a five year cycle for snow in town. Close to the mountains it's a little less than that. It seldom ever sticks to the ground though. In 44 years I've seen it really snow all of one time where it was on the ground for two or three days. That was January 1974. In January 1991, I saw daytime temps go below freezing for the first and only time. It frequently does get below freezing for the overnight lows, but unless you work the graveyard shift, who is ever out at that time? You seldom need more than a lined jacket and sweatshirt. Now and then a heavy jacket, but rarely, and almost never in the daytime unless it is windy. You would really be out of place in a wool overcoat except if you're outside watching the fireworks on New Year's Eve.

Winter really lasts from about mid December to mid February. The trees bud and plants come up in the second half of February. Spring has sprong by the end of March...then starts summerl. (it actually is the point at which are temperatures cross over coastal southern CA).

By my standards it is never really cold. Even for the fireworks on New Years Eve my Rochester jackets are too warm.

Consider flood insurance unless you know for sure you don't need it. If the neighborhood is new get it until you have been through at least one gulley washer. It is cheap. If an old neighborhood ask the neighbors. Floods are funny here. Wanna see my scars?

I took this picture of Henderson on Dec 19, 2006. If you look closely to the right of the picture you can even see Sunset Station Casino covered in snow:
