heating/cooling costs can vary greatly depending on: amount/quality of insulation, type of windows/coverings, SEER rating of A/C units (or if evaporative cooling is used), and floor plan (open homes are more expensive to keep comfy).

I have a SEER 15 5 ton A/C unit to cool 1850 two story stucco home. We blew in add'l insulation in the attic and treated our windows with bronze solar screen coating. Summer bills run ~250. Last summer we installed an evaporative cooler (cost $500) and the unit paid for itself in four months.

Bottom line? It really depends . . .
