Default move to las vegas?

okay, I am 30, single, female, recently finished my masters degree and have been offered jobs in a few different places (you may have seen me post to a few other state message boards!) my latest offer is in Las Vegas....but this is one I have been thinking about for a long time.

I have seen a lot of people post negative things about the city, and a lot of realtors post positives. I can understand both views but it seems like most of the negatives are from people who hate the desert or just do not think its a good place to raise a family. I appreicate the realtors expert views too but of course have to wonder if they are biased.

So anyway, I do want to eventually have a family but would probably leave las vegas if that were to happen. How is it for a young single woman...professional, I am not in the service industry. I do enjoy the strip and I like to vacation in Las Vegas.

Actually there are only a few RE agents here. It is mostly me and a couple of others who visit occassionally. And I am a Realtor but also a community activist. And I am pretty knowledgable about the town.

Any action on these lists are very long term. Somebody I meet who likes me and calls in a few years to buy a home. The stuff that goes on is virtually all rental...which often does not pay for gas. I will rarely show a rental and then the guy is likely a serviceman or a particularly appealing case.

The fact that you liked the strip on vacation is pretty much irrelevant. Locals rarely go there. Even when we gamble or eat out the strip is too big a hassle.

The one relevant point is if you have been here when it is hot. We do a great deal of work with retirees and find about 20% leave within a year or so because they find the heat unbearable. My wife and I enjoy the heat and go away in January..which we find a little too cold.

You can decide what you think about the family thing when the time is right. Most though stay. It is even many of the naysayers agree...a very nice place to be 30 and single.

I've heardsome people say, its great if your young and single and like to party. Often I think they are really saying or meaning "its great if you want no attachments and hook ups and your a young guy"

I do like to go out and meet people for sure, and I do think I would still go to the strip if I lived there, that is just the kind of person I am. maybe not everyday but defintiley for entertainment and to meet people and do all the fun things that are available to me, at least on some weekends. I also have friends in california I could visit. I am accustomed to driving and making an effort to do the things I want to do and am not one to stay home cause its more convienient. Ever read about Megan Edwards? she lives there and likes to visit the strip...I think her and I have a lot in common. I've lived in a lot of different places because I like to explore what is there and what is around there. I would probably be taking a lot of weekend road trips to places like monument valley, san diego, that kind of thing. I think it might be a good base to see that area of the country, which is not easy to do from Chicago unless you take 4 weeks off of work.

The heat....well. I have been there in August twice. It sure is horrible in a jeep wrangler with the top down driving across the desert! and it might be similiar to being cooped up in my apartment here in the winter. I think it would bother me a little bit, eventually I would miss the green and humiditity...and probably take a vacation. I dont see it as being a huge problem to me, except I do worry a bit about premature aging and all that sun!!

I guess my biggest concern is the many negative things I have read about the place...the possiblity of meeting a decent guy, and a little bit worried about crime but not too much as I am pretty street smart and should make enough to live in decent area. I love the natural beaty of the desert but am concerned about how long it would take for me to dislike it and miss the abundant natural resources I am used too....like lakes, lots of them. I am not worried about missing winter....

Based off what I've read in this thread, all the negative comments come from the same people. They either moved out or are in the process of moving. Cities are all based off personal preference. If you can't handle gambling, sex, casinos, hookers, bums, etc. then Las Vegas isn't for you. I've lived in Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego and Long beach and I'm moving to Las Vegas on March 1st. The only way is to experience it for yourself. With risk comes rewards I guess. Isn't that called gambling?

See....when I have stayed on the strip, those things are not as noticable to me as the great restaraunts, shopping, cheesy but fun and exciting architechture, spas...how i love spas, swimming pools....

I'm not a big gambler (except with my risk-taking moving all over the country!) and the hookers....well, I noticed that a lot more the first time I went there when I was 19, had nothing to do, and stayed in a cheap area of the strip. I was hilariously asked if I was a high class hooker once at the luxor while playing a slot machine, and that was just kinda funny to me.

I'm really a fairly conservative person but I tend not to be bothered by the goings on at the strip. Downtown is not really my thing though, I think it is fun on occasion.

I can't imagine that alot of neighborhoods are plagued by hookers and bums?

Any info on the area around UNLV?

Thanks for the replies so far, I appreciate it!

It depends which area around UNLV. Areas like Spencer and Harmon are real nice ranging to Tropicana and Swenson, which are almost dumps.

I don't recommend anyone who is not local move into the area around UNLV. It is tricky particularly to the strip side. I would suggest south but I don't like any of it very much. You get crack and college kids mixed together.

Get a little further east or south and it gets much better. But then it is not by UNLV.

Why NOT try it? As you said, you are footlose and fancy free. If Vegas is attractive to you, give it a try. If you hate it, move on! There is no rule that says you have to live somewhere terminally boring! You're young! Live someplace fun!

I'm not a realtor and I've lived all over the world. I don't regret it! I feel sorry for all those people who have never been more than 100miles from home! I do love LV. I have lived there part time for ages and I'm looking forward to living there permanently.

thanks

the reason I ask...thats where the job is

where would you recommend I look for housing that would be somewhat convienient? I dont mind driving a bit. (I am used to a 25 mile commute) but I think I want to be close enough to take taxi's to the strip...though have not completley made up my mind about this.

thanks!
