hate to burst your bubble but scorpions are a real problem in this city,i am looking at a mature bark scorpion that my sister found in her apartment this morning.ive lived in las vegas for 30 years and have caught every creture that roams the lasvegas valley.
now for the facts the only scorpion native to the valley are the harry scorpion, and this scorpion is not venomis and ive never seen one in a residents, these guys are pretty big (around 6" from head to the tip of their tail and have a black back) and are hard to find in the wild.in the past 10 years our city has had a epidemic of bark scorpions(the only scorpion in the country that are highly venimus and will kill a child or an elderly person and make you very sick)these scorpions are not native to the valley and come from southern arizona.the bark scorpion is transported here from palm trees bought from nersurys in arizons not california and are easily identified by their light tone and are very small(about an inch and a half long).this all started when they planted thousands of palm trees on the strip. i have never found a scorpion in any of my houses , but my mother and sister both have cought at least 6 bark scorpions in their apartments in the past 4 years.dont mean to scare you but you are moveing to the desert and we do have creepy crawlys hear.whatch out for black widow spiders too |

Been my experience that they are neighborhood specific and not very broadly spread. They come in with palm trees from both CA and AZ. They are simply common in palm trees.
Not particularly dangerous though sometimes painful. There have been two deaths since 1968 in Arizona where they are quite plentiful. Bees have taken a higher toll. I have never heard of a scorpion fatality in Nevada. Best checked for at night with a black light. You will see them clearly if they are around. They are best controlled by locating nests and destroying same. They need moisture by the way. |

There are scorpions here in summerlin, just moved here 3 weeks ago and caught about 10 or 11 bark scorpions.
My stupid neighbors have palm trees and i;m sure that is where they are coming from, they have pissed me off to the point where i have invested a good chunk of change into killing them and have made it my goal to destroy every one on my block! Buy and black light and a bug vacuum and seek and destroy! |

They tend to be quite local so you can literally wipe them out. |

Today in Pueblo Park my wife saw a tarantula, and later one of the park workers told us she had just seen one too. I believe they migrate in breeding season, so maybe this is the time of year for it. Unfortunately I didn't get to see one. I'd like to because they are pretty interesting to see.

Last time I saw a scorpion in Las Vegas...knock on wood...was in the late 1960's, except for a dead one about 15 years ago, and another dead one about three or four years ago.

The last time I saw a scorpion was back in my old apt in southern california. I used to see tarantula's, scorpions, earwigs, snakes of all types, centipedes, potato bugs, spiders of all sorts, tiny little tree frogs, field mice, skunks, coyotes, mountain lions and other assorted critters.
