Smile Planning well in advance for a move to LV

Greetings....

I currently live in Michigan and am seriously considering a move out to the Las Vegas area. This most likely will not be anytime soon as I have a house in Michigan I would have to sell first.

I'm a single woman with 2 dogs (border collie & english springer) both about 35-40#. I'm looking for suggestions as to areas around Vegas to look at for rentals (apt/house/condo) that are pet friendly and reasonably safe/priced.

As I probably will have the opportunity to continue to work for my existing company remotely, (thereby, the only thing I need to guarantee is high speed internet access via cable, preferably). I don't have any commuting concerns at present, so I don't need to be right by freeways, etc. I'd like to be reasonably close (30-45 minutes) to Vegas for access to the nightlife, shows, etc.

I have read some threads here about dog parks and cautions regarding the heat for pets and such. What about other "natural" cautions in regard to snakes, scorpions, spiders, etc. should I be concerned about for my dogs? They have no experience with poisonous snakes or insects (and I can *just* see my springer gleefully running over to play with a scorpion!)

Anyway - I just wondered where a good place to start researching outside of Vegas (I've heard to the south - Henderson, Boulder City, etc.) would be. Also - is it worth working with a realtor that assists with rentals or am I better off doing research on my own? I'm almost thinking that a small house rental outside the area with a fenced yard might be better than dealing with an apt/condo rental - but I defer to your (local) wisdom and suggestions!

Thanks in advance!
Melanie

Hi!

I have been here a little over 2 months. Came from MI due to my husband being transferred. We chose Henderson based on the schools. If you don't have to worry about that, it gives you a little more playing field. The area I am in-89052 can be pricey compared to other areas, but it is close to the Strip and other shopping/entertainment.

The pricing in the NW area of Vegas is better and the area is very nice. Centennial Hills and Aliante are very nice. I think it is a little further from the Strip so that could be an issue for you. I do feel safe where I am at.

As far as bugs, the only one I saw was when we went to Red Rock-saw a huge tarantula crossing the road! Yuck. Way less spiders than MI, I think. But you do have to contend with the roaches in the summer at night-another yuck. My dog is not bothered by any of them. (Lhasa Apso) Yes, he would rather have a yard I am sure, but the apt has grass and alot of yards do not and they can be very small compared to MI, depending on what you can afford.

Good to plan ahead. What brings you here? I knew my home in MI would not sell quickly or for a decent price so we still have it and will most likely keep it that way. My family is there and I have 3 older children there. One daughter and her BF are living in the house.

Good luck in your search, if you have any specific questions, feel free to DM me!

Nope - no kids, so schools are not an issue. I'm more concerned about my dogs having a safe place to be taken out to. (in addition to walks and park visits.)

Thanks for the guidelines!

Just coming out this way because I am tired of the cold/grey winters here. I love Michigan otherwise, but I wanted to make a new start and I've enjoyed the climate and the area in the several times I've visited out there. (And yes, I actually love the heat!)
