Moving to Las Vegas in Jan.
Hi Everyone,
I've done a bit of research and used some contacts in Vegas to find a good spot to land in January, but am not sold so far on any one place.
I'm moving from Seattle where I've spent the last 8 years living within a four mile radius of the downtown area. I like living close to work because I can take the bus in. I've been reading that this isn't necessarily the same in Vegas, and that you need a car in order to get to/from work and elsewhere. I do have a car - which leads me to this: is traffic REALLY that bad? Everyone says traffic is bad, but here it can take about 40 minutes to go 4 miles, and that's in city - don't even get me started on the freeway.
I do already have a job, which pays me enough so that I can afford $1000 or less for an apt. Ideally I'd also like a garage and a pool to come with that. If I'm working in 89102, what is a realistic area for me to live in?
If it helps - I'm single, have a lot of friends and family who will most likely be coming to visit (so maybe a 2 bdrm?), I love the outdoors and am very social.
Is it going to be hard to meet people in Vegas? I'm not really a partier or clubber, more of a dinner and drinks girl - but I'm sure the strip will be good inexpensive entertainment.
Thanks all!

The strip is the expensive entertainment, I think. Cheaper off the strip.

Completely different from Seattle. I used to live in Federal Way and bussed into the city every weekend. Public transport in Seattle is much better than in Vegas. If you have a car it is a much better idea to drive. Traffic is nowhere near as bad as Seattle. 40 minutes will get you across town in rush hour unless there is an accident, depending on which route you take.
$1000 a month should get you a 2 bdrm in a nicer area. You might even be able to find a rental home for that much. For an 89102 work zip, I would look into living in the 89117 zip code. The Lakes/Peccole Ranch/South Summerlin is a very nice area and should be pretty convenient to your work. It also has dining and shopping very convenient to the area.
It can be difficult to meet people out here. Best to start around where you work and live. It is not impossible and I have made quite a few good friends out here.

I lived in Seattle for 20 years. Moved to Vegas for 9 months and moved back to Seattle. Two totally different cities. Traffic is a joke compared to Seattle (seriously). I highly doubt though that you can or will keep yourself occupied by people watching on the strip. Thats something you will do from time to time but thats about it. I found that people are harder to meet there. Initially you will love all the blue and sun but it does come at a cost--very little green (of course it is a desert) and no real change in seasons. Will you be ok with that over the long haul?
The heat is another factor. I personally like the heat but alot of people complain about it--intense is an understatement come June-August. To compare, heat the oven up and then put your head close to it as you open the door--that is the kind of heat you will feel all the time during the summer months!
Congrats on having the job--that is the main reason I moved back.

You don't by any chance know if the company your working for in Las Vegas is hiring do you? I am still looking for a viable oppurtunity in Las Vegas. Thanks!

The job I have in WA? Im a branch manager for a large credit union.
The competition in Las Vegas was too severe (hundreds if not thousands applying for every job opening from what I was hearing from hiring managers). I applied for anything that would pay my bills (I was somewhat picky about salary, hours and benefits though and was hoping to stay in lending or banking). After 4 months and 3 interviews I started looking in So Cal. Had alot more interest from employers there but they all wanted me to move to CA first (before they would offer a job). I wasnt willing to make a move there and then find out I didnt get the job or that the income wouldnt support the high cost of living there.
I nailed the job interview in WA and then moved back up here in September.

I live 14 miles from the strip in my opinion one of the best areas of Las Vegas. It's called Summerlin and the area I live in is near the Red Rock Casino and the Red Rock Nat'l Park. If you Google either one you'll get an idea of those two main attractions to the area.
This is a website to check out specially if you are not a nightclub type person and enjoy a relaxed or you feel adventurous then this place is worth looking into.
Las Vegas Master Planned Community - Summerlin
Summerlin is one of the nations top neighborhoods to live in and apartements that are good sized are under $1000/mo.
My drive to work wich is on the strip is 40 minutes tops and often 25 minutes without traffic. Warning a drive fast. *side note, I have only seen about 6 traffic stops in two years going to and from work combined*
