I LOVE the cold, absolutely love it...the heat kills me. But I am sure if I lived somewhere that was freezing all of the time, I'd hate that too. I LOVED the weather in Hawaii tho!

PLEASE LOCALS HELP ADVISE - SHOULD I MOVE TO LAS VEGAS?
I have done much online research, now I need some real unbiased answers by some locals. I am considering Henderson, Paradise, Spring Valley, any other suburbun areas with: - Lots of shops, restruants, and businesses - Not too many casino bar/restruants - Relitivly safe
QUESTIONS: 1/ Does living in the Vegas area long term or permenently realy wear you out? - I hear lots of people move out sooner then any other US city? Or does this just relate to downtown and the strip? Are there any turn over numbers or websites showing comparisons?
2/ What is meant in this forum by "the city beyond the strip is nasty" ? and is this reflective of MOST the city or suburbun communities?
3/ Is Vegas still prety congested with "casino bars/restruants" one you get out of downtown & the strip? If I can get some real answers by some good people I'd realy appreaciate it a lot - I am planing to relocate back to the states soon and contribute to the comunity with at least one business. Please locals help me make the right desision instead of driving around from one state to another.

Thanks a lot!

I think it's the weather that drives people out. Or that in conjunction with them realizing that the strip is just one street, and Las Vegas is actually just another big(ish) city in the southwest.

What it means is that there are people that, for whatever reasons, have a "thing" against Las Vegas. Nothing more. Some of them may have never visited, some probably did but maybe ventured a few blocks east of the strip and were unimpressed, and others moved here expecting to get rich dealing blackjack or something and when their ill-conceived fantasy was shattered, they blamed the city.

There are a lot of bars here. A lot. And there are slot/poker machines everywhere - at the grocery store, 7-11 - everywhere. But you get used to seeing them, and it's really not a big deal. Neither of those things are a problem though, as far as I'm concerned. It's just part of life in Las Vegas.

I think it all really depends on what type of person you are. For some, the weather is a huge downside, so they leave. For others its the crime, and still for others they want to live in a small town, or a bigger city, or someplace greener, etc. There are a plethora of reasons people leave Las Vegas, just like any other city.
2/ What is meant in this forum by "the city beyond the strip is nasty" ? and is this reflective of MOST the city or suburbun communities?
Some people come here and they think that Las Vegas in its entirety looks exactly like the strip. When they deviate from the strip a few blocks west or east of it, and they are completely shocked at what they see. Unfortunately, the urban areas around the strip and down town are amongst the poorest neighborhoods in this city. Stepping off of Las Vegas Boulevard (aka "The Strip") into a low income neighborhood is a bit of a shock for some people. One thing about Las Vegas is that there are pockets of "bad" parts of town, and pockets of great parts of town all interspersed throughout the city.

There arent huge casino/resorts all over Las Vegas if thats what youre asking. However we do have neighborhood casinos which tend to be a bit smaller than on-strip casinos, some have bars and restaurants...some dont. One thing you will always see is slot machines; theyre everywhere! There are plenty of places in Las Vegas that still have poker machines that do not have a casino like atmosphere as well. Since gambling is such a huge part of Las Vegas culture, even locals like to play, thats why there are slot machines just about everywhere.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the advise -
But keep in mind I am thinking of moving to a place away from the strip and downtown. I have tentatively decided on either Henderson -or- East Paradise. Both are lower in crime and upper-middle class incomes.

Tell Me:

Suburban Vegas (5+ miles away from strip and downtown Vegas) - can I assume the majority (but not all) of areas are middle to upper class in quality?

About the malls and shopping centers in Las Vegas - the really look great online, and have great notoriety. But are there many great malls/shopping centers for locals, or are the realy good ones (compared to the US averege mall/shopping center) mainly the ones most tourists go?

Do you live in Vegas and for how long?

THANKS A MILLION!!
I REALY APPRECIATE THE GOOD ADVISE FROM both swager and Arab Eyes

I don't live in Las Vegas but from a reasonable view point we all know that tourists see things from a much more pleasant view. As for living in Las Vegas, I am the type of person who believes that any city is as good , or as bad, a place to live as you make it. Most of us already have a basic routine lifestyle and it doesn't matter where you live you will continue to live the same general lifestyle. All these posts are from 2008 til present. I have done a little research on vegas as I intend to move there. I see plenty of work for people who want to work and I see that the cost of living is comparable to any large city. Another factor is common sense should tell you that unless you are independantly wealthy, you cannot live in Las Vegas and enjoy the life of a tourist everyday. Like any major city you will have to work and pay bills and hope you have enough money left over each month to maybe grab a $1 sandwich at McD's.

The shows were awesome (Blue Man, Fantasy, etc)

The restaurants were unreal. I could move into Chinois haha.

So is living in Vegas as fun as vacationing in Vegas?
If you are rich and have lots of leisure time.

People who come here to live the "club lifestyle" or to "make it big at the blackjack tables" are the ones who end up having to live in cheesy apartments on the east side while working at Target, and they then come on this board and talk about how horrible the crime/violence/heat are in Las Vegas.
That is true of any city. People follow their dreams. When their dreams don't work out, they get pessimistic. I expect more of it happens in Los Angeles than anywhere.
Some people come to LV and bet their lives on red. Sometimes the wheel doesn't land on red.

Good point. I lived in Chicago for many years and you could always tell the visitors because they would walk around looking up at the tall buildings we saw everyday. Very few Chicagoans would pay $10 to go to the top of the Sears Tower. Fewer go to the museums and Navy Pier. I suspect it is like that pretty much everywhere.
