My husband and I are coming to Las Vegas end of this month to look for a place to live. We both have made a career in the construction / mortgage business in Austin, TX for the last 8 years and feel its time for a change.
A BIG CHANGE!!
In the last 2 years I have been laid off twice as a loan officer / loan processor due the constricting mortgage industry and I suspect it may be coming again soon. Business is REALLY slowing down. My husband has been a Construction Superintendent/ Manager for 20 years and two weeks ago was laid off from his job. There was not one single job in the paper this weekend for someone with construction experience.

So we decided its time to make a move and change our lives all the way around. New jobs, new surroundings, new challenges.

We have been to Vegas several times and enjoy the area. I worked for a national builder as a Loan Officer and LV was one of my markets so I am very familiar with the area. We also like the fact you have so much to see and do within a few hours drive....snow skiing, boating, ect.

The big question we have is finding employment. We are fully aware that your mortgage / construction industry is worse that ours so we arent even going to try that field. We also understand the income we are used to making is not going to happen there as well.
What we are thinking about is getting a job in the hospitality / casino fields. Both of us have a lot of customer service and management experience but both of us are WELL AWARE of the fact we will need to start from the bottom up. We are up for the challenge. That and we do have a good rainy day fund to cover us for quite a while. Trust me, we know what we are getting into here.

Question is what should we expect? I am 38 and my husband is 42. Is our age going to be an issue in finding employment since we would be starting ground up? Personally I think its more an asset since we both understand the importance of excellent customer service and how to deliver it. We just want some insight from someone in the business and any suggestions you may offer. Where to start, what to expect, any tips??

Thanks so much ahead of time.

Just make sure you dont move there without a job lined up first!! As you are aware both fields (construction and lending) are in a major slowdown. Unfortunately everyone who moves to LV is thinking casino's are the "catch all job" but the casinos are overwhelmed with applicants. Ive heard numbers like 10,000 people applying for 200 jobs! Unemployment is presently 7.1% and expected to increase to 8.6%.
My background is lending as well (10 years as a loan officer and 10 years as a financial services branch manager) and I couldnt find work in LV. After 8 months and $50,000 I moved back to Washington state and nailed a nice paying job within a week of moving back.
Bottom line--At least one of you needs to have a job lined up before you make the move.

Ya know, in 1991 the economy was about like it is now, and jobs in my field were almost non-existent (TV Program Director). So I went to the State of Nevada Job Service (now called JobConnect) to see if they could help me find a job in some other field, and they ended up hiring me to work there. You might want to check out State, City (Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson), and Clark County jobs. Here's the state's postings:

The pay wasn't the greatest, but the benefits were good, and I have a retirement I never would have had otherwise. I'll warn you though, they are thankless jobs dealing with the public and, frankly, certain bureaucratic lifers. I had just recovered from triple by-pass surgery and I told my wife I thought a "cushy" government job was just what I needed. Turned out to be ten times more stressful than working in television.
