Maybe this is too specific a question, but can anybody tell me about Valley High School? I know there are magnet programs there - are they any good? It looks like we will probably be zoned for it, and I'm wondering if my daughter should apply to one of the magnet programs also.

(I know there are magnet programs in other schools, but it seems like she would have to commute for a very long time...)

Thanks in advance!

Valley is a very weak school. I would avoid sending a child there. Try all other options.

valley does have a good magnet program but i think that they only select 100 students every year to participate, my little brother was selected and from what i've heard of it it's very hard. i don't know if they have other magnet programs there or not but i graduated from silverado high school and everything i heard about valley wasn't good. it was a joke on all of the sports teams that i was on that when we had to go play at valley we should wear are bullet proof vests.

Valley has great magnet programs. I almost went there, and probably should've went there because its closer to where I live, but for me, it was between the Travel and Tourism magnet or the IT magnet at the school I go to now. It is a really hard decision to choose between magnets and its hard to switch depending on the program. According to teachers at my school that have taught at both Valley and Silverado, they preferred Valley because the students were more polite and more engaged into learning (that's not my opinion, so don't argue with me about it).

Just as a comparison, according to the Nevada report card, Valley has smaller average class sizes, but a lower graduation rate (which is common with many Clark County schools), Valley had more Violence Related and habitual truancy problems, but less substance and weapons problems than Silverado. Also, Valley gets $300 more funding per student and has a better average daily attendance. Both are in need of improvement on AYP. Valley has lower reading scores, but the math and writing scores are hard to decipher for both schools. You can do a comparison like that for any school that you may be in the zone for to Valley on www.nevadareportcard.com. By the way, wolfman14, you probably heard those stories from people that don't go to Valley, that's usually how that stuff is spread, especially for athletics competition.

I think the magnet cutoff has already passed for the coming school year, but you can try and call, they may make an exception, I know that mine does.

Thank you everybody! A special thanks for the warning about the cutoff date (unfortunately it was apparently last week! - but I am willing to fight for my child to be one of those exceptions).

So, am I understanding that the magnets will be good even though the school's overall test scores etc. look not so good?

Be careful. Our "kid" is tough...and driven. There are numerous magnet programs that involve less risk than Valley. You don't want to go there unless you know a whole lot, have an in, and have preplanned it. It is not taht sort of opportunity. Try Ad Tech or LV Academy.

Unfortunately I don't think she's very interested in performing arts! I have been wondering about Ad Tech though. I see it has very high test scores (and a great website), but looking at the courses they talk a lot about getting professional certification in various technology careers. Which is great, but HS seems a little early to me to decide!

We were looking specifically at the IB program at Valley, which says it is college-prep and seems less "specialized" than a lot of the magnets. And of course, it will be close. Obviously none of that matters if the kids aren't SAFE there, though.

Sorry to be a pain, olecapt, but is that what you mean by risk? Is it a bad neighborhood, or do you mean that it's risky trying to get in?

The school is very close to the bottom of Las Vegas in a number of parameters. Unless you have reason to believe you have a great fit to some magnet program don't go there. The school is rough and lower socio/economic strata.

A driven child can rise above all that and do well. Want to bet on it?

Some of the magnet schools are good. But... don't be fooled. Bad things happen at those schools as well. While subbing at LV Academy I had my purse stolen from my belongings by two boys. When I caught them red handed with it and turned them in to the dean the dean was a wimp. She said she couldn't possibly bear to call their parents and tell them what an awful thing they had done.

NO.... better to let the parents go on thinking they have good kids going to a good school. Puke.

Anyway, I subbed quite a bit at Vo-tech and if there are programs of interest there you should check into it. I found that to be a pretty decent school.
