Default Las Vegas is doomed.

I know it is bad everywhere. But it is worser for Nevada. I have lived here for 20 years. I have never saw anything like this. All my friends are losing their jobs.

Worser?

Yeah, it does stink. It is either here or MI for me. Great choices. I will take the weather for as long as I can here.

MI will be even worse when the Big 3 all go bankrupt. I have friends in CA and they are all in fear of their jobs because of low demand for their products. it really doesn't matter where your at these days.

These posts crack me up. Especially considering its just a random statement. Not a link to an article or anything.

Im being relocated to Vegas by my job so... Its not as bad as you might think. I would recommend not working at the casinos, but for the casinos. Check out IGT, Bally, WMS, ShuffleMaster etc. Some stuff may come and go, but the gaming will stay. If not in Vegas then somewhere else.

I'm not a doom or gloom person, since I know it will recover and people will adapt. Some better than others... esp those who live within their means and keep their costs in check. I have a good friend in CA that lost her job and she is getting a unemployment for 18 months and has a 6 months severance package from her old job. She just rents a room now for $400 a month instead and bought a used car without payments.

It's been "worser" several times in the past. I believe it was over 11% in Nevada in 1982 when the U.S. rate was over 10%. Granted, it is higher in sheer numbers of people now because of population growth, but percentage-wise it has been a lot worse. It's not good, but Las Vegas isn't "doomed" unless the whole country is doomed. It's not good that 7% or 8% of the work force is unemployed, but 92% is employed and doing fine.

Don't quite remember how California treats severance pay, but I think it's about the same as here. So just so you know, you can't collect unemployment until the severance runs out, and even with extended benefits, unemployment insurance has never lasted 18 months that I remember. The max, if you qualify, is 26 weeks, then first extensions are usually for another 13, and second extensions may be 8 to 13. Can't recall if we ever had three extensions...maybe, but eligibility gets harder to qualify for with each one.

Nobody can live on unemployment insurance. It's merely a short term stipend to help you look for another job.

I know what you are saying, but you can collect unemployment in CA even if you have a severance package which is different than NV. Even so, that is pretty good considering her current state of joblessness. I'm sure she will find something that can support her needs. People just have to adapt and maybe jump to another line of work that is more in demand.
