There are rougly 10 million people who drink Colarado River water in the US and a million or so more in Mexico.
If you think it bad here imagine what the Mexican think.

Complaining about water in a desert...hmmm.... :-)
At home I didn't drink the tap water, always bought bottled at the store. But when you go to restaurants you are getting tap water. That's what's in your ice tea, coffee, sodas, etc.

L.V. Water
Since I moved here-I won't drink the water. I think it's the Rocket Fuel in it, that's the worst contaminent. That is one thing I miss from Wisconsin, the clean crisp water. And the Great Cheese!!

Actually most if not all restaurants process the tap water before serving or using. Many have elaborate systems. We cook and drink RO water. And we have well water that is thousands of years old...but very hard and, to some, not as tasty as RO water.
Mexican water outside of a few cities like Puerto Vallarta and similar is not suited for drinking. Mexicans don't. Nor should you. The bottle of powerful disinfectant is present on every kitchen counter once outside the big cities. The Mexicans do it because they understand what happens when they don't.
Note that the street vendors in many coastal cities sell shell fish. They wash it with bottled water befor delivery. Seem to work pretty well. I however always watch to make sure locals are buying from a particular stand before I use it. Means the price is reasonable and the rinse water pure.

Water
Reverse Osmosis (R O), is indeed one way to treat water and than be assured that it is safe. And anyone that would drink water from an unknown source in Mexico, is a few slices of meat short of a full sandwhich.

I disagree about the restaurant and tap water thing. I know people that work in 4 star restuarants. No elaborate filtration system that you speak of.
water of glass on the table - tap water
water to boil pasta - tap water
water to wash their hands that touches the food they are serving to you - tap water
water they use to mop the floor - tap water
water they use to wash dishes - tap water
Basically all of it is tap water. Besides I drink Vegas tap water all the time, and it is not that bad.

Get a filter on your sink. And of course change it every few months. Works great. I use Pur.
Those countertop Brita filter pitchers work great too.
