Number 3: i don't agree the crime here is very high, our "border-line bad neighborhoods" aren't worse than good areas of other places, they may look a little run-down, but they are just older and would be normal in some other places...there's only one or 2 definite bad areas, but again anything can happen anywhere, until we start seeing areas with busted up windows and memorials all over, i don't think the crime is as big as the ppl here are making it to be...
4. I don't know why i have to continue to say this, but YOU moved to Vegas, you KNEW that there were casinos here, why would you move to a place where you are not even comfortable with the main industry...and i still don't understand what casinos have to do with raising children...if you keep your kids away from the casinos, they will be more interested in it, if you immerse them, they will think nothing of it, i don't think anything of it, its just like walking through a mall to get to a restaurant or a movie theater or bowling, but instead of walking by stores, you are walking by machines and tables...
4. Schools are better than average for a large school district. And in fact the suburban schools are the same as anywhere. The inner city schools are rough as they are anywhere.
It is not a biad school system. It is not a great one either.
Brother and SIL moved to Summerlin in 2000 from upstate NY and couldn't be happier. She is outgoing, has met friends from different sources...he associates with "work friends" outside of work. They do have alarm system hooked up, as most their Summerlin neighbors do. No break-ins or auto theft have occurred to them. They have no school age kids, so no school system knowledge/concerns.
Had a question for LV residents. I'm considering moving to LV from So.Cal possibly a little later on. I was in LV this weekend and struck up a conversation with a resident that I had met. She told me that she has lived there for 11 yrs and hates it. I told her that I was thinking about relocating and she tried to talk me out of it.
She said:
1. LV is just one big transient towns and people come and go like pairs of socks and don't actually get to become real aquainted with anyone.
2. Most families that move there only reside there for about a year and then split.
3. She said that crime is beyond soaring everywhere and it's the grand theft auto capital of the U.S
4. She said terrible place to raise kids because the schools are terrible and now matter how far you live away from the Casino's whole Ora presence is still there.
When she told me all of that I kinda scratched my head and realized yes this is the reality that she see's and not me, but with 1 persons opinion I can't condemn the whole area....What are your thoughts and input on it?
I have been here for 6 years and I tend to agree with what the woman told you.
Yes, Vegas is very very transient. People come and go here all the time. How will that really impact you though? The transient nature of Las Vegas really has not caused me much concern. I've seen that impact children more than adults. I had a family member who lived out here for a while. She was a school teacher. She used to tell me how so many of the students would be there for a few weeks and then their parents would go back to Mexico for a while. Very hard on the child, just a way of life for the parents.
I can't comment on how long most people reside here. 1 or 2 years seems pretty short. I'd imagine most people live here for 5 or 10 years before they move on. That is purely based on my own experience. I really couldn't say.
Crime is high. We all know that. Vegas has problems and crime is one of them. Things were trending down during the last few years. Likely getting better. Not sure what part of Southern California you are from. I don't predict you would be shocked or surprised by the crime here.
One of the most important things she told you was about raising kids here. I agree with her whole heartedly. I would never, under any circumstance, raise my child here. Not because I think he or she would grow up to be a casino worker, but because I would not want them to grow up thinking that life here is normal. It's not.
Things here are on the slide. If the economy continues to tank and if things get more serious Las Vegas will continue to be nothing more than an afterthought. A luxury for people who have extra cash to burn. A place for them to go and disrespect for a weekend. Thats all it is, and right now, it can barely live up to that.
I would not move here. Not until housing and the economy turns around. California is more stable, hate to say. But its true.

What's so unnormal about life here?
Besides there not being anything to do here, with Wet N Wild, MGM Grand Adventures, Scandia, and Mountasia closing, I don't know what's so unnormal...only difference may be that instead of malls or downtowns, the casinos are our main source of entertainment, whether it be gaming, restaurants, movies, skating, shopping, or bowling...
I tend not to agree with what the woman told him. She sounds like nothing makes her happy and has to exaggerate her experiences here because she hates living here. If I totally hated where I lived, I would move already!
We do live in a transient type town, true, but the majority of people that moved out were construction workers and illegals with the new laws not letting them work, etc. I have no idea how the schools are since I don't have kids. I think you have to make sure you don't get a bad teacher or one that hates their job.
Thousands of people raise their kids here and they turn out find if there is parental involvement. Leave a kid alone all the time and they will get into lots of trouble. It doesn't take a village, it takes the parents to raise them. Be involved, and you can raise your kids here as well as anywhere. Las Vegas isn't hell like some weirdos seem to think. It's not the place, it's the person.
Mtndude, you just have to experience life here for yourself. Number 1 rule: Don't start off in a bad neighborhood with roaches* as house pets. The cheaper it is, the more chance it has *furnished pets. Most people that hate LV so much started off in area's like that. Talk to Olecapt and he can make sure you start off in a nice area where you will probably be happy and like it. If you are still in doubt and have too many apprehensions about moving here, then don't. Wait until you are truly ready.
Las Vegas is humanity. If you come here and find yourself appalled by the city, you have to look at what part of yourself it is reflecting back at you that you don't want to see.
