YEP.....One of my favorite bars is: "The Four Aces" on Boulder highway. It's a great biker hangout with a gun store right across the street in case any extra ammo is needed. LOL!!!

I hear the community of Aliante is good, any truth to that? Is it close enough to Nellis? What area is it in?

Aliante is in North Las Vegas...Its ok, but it is very far from a lot of things, but they are building a lot nearby it. It is close enough to Nellis...

Default NLV Vs. Henderson

Here are some observations about the "new" NLV. My brother purchased a house in one of the nice new subdivisions north of Craig Road. Around the same time I purchased a home in the extreme southern end of Henderson (not Green Valley Ranch/Anthem, etc). Both are valued about the same.

He has an HOA to ensure standards, and the neighborhood is very nice. The community felt it necessary to hire off duty NLV police officers to patrol their neighborhood as security to supplement the regular city police. We have no HOA and still feel safe with just our HPD on patrol.

His son attended a new high school, just off Craig Road, that also served most of the lower income areas south of Craig Road (some maybe even from the city of Las Vegas). This school has been the scene of a few shootings nearby, and almost on campus, during school events. Even though he lives in a nice area/nice house, his children attend a school, even though it is a new school and should be expected to be very good, that is certainly scary. When his son graduated from this school, the graduation ceremony was unbelievable. What should have been a dignified, memorable event was actually a screamfest of hooligans (the audience) shouting out street nicknames of the future America's Most Wanted, as these graduates gyrated on stage the latest street dances. Unbelievable.

My son also attended a newer high school in Henderson (again NOT GV or Anthem). We have been fortunate enough to not have any school related violence, and my other child now attends this school. MY son's graduation ceremony was the complete opposite. It was formal, controlled, and dignified. The audience had respect for the graduates, and the other members of the audience. My nephew attended my son's graduation and he commented that he wished his ceremony had been more like that.

These two things have always reminded me of why I like my part of the Valley more than his.

Default Summerlin safety?

What about all those home invasions, casino parking lot assaults, etc. in Summerlin and the northwest in general? Thieves know where the money is and they have cars too. Generally stolen cars, but they still commute. Anthem in Henderson and other high value areas can also be targets of criminals.

And the formerly nice areas of Rainbow/95, W. Charleston, etc. are very close to Summerlin. I wouldn't buy a house anywhere along Rainbow within a few miles of the 95, and don't even start on the traffic.

Although I live a few miles away from the 7-11 on Pacific in downtown Henderson, I have been in it on occasion. It is older and timeworn, but I would feel completely safe walking down any street in downtown Henderson. Not the prettiest homes in the valley, you look at them and wonder 'what the h*** were they thinking?', but not dangerous. I patronize some of the local businesses along Basic, Water, etc regularly. Now go across Boulder Highway to the area of Major/Minor/Center Street near the projects, excuse me, income challenged housing (had to put that in for all the previous rants about PC), and it's a different story. As bad or worse than anything in "Northtown" or the "Westside". Every city has its areas to avoid. It depends on how much contact you have to have with the people from those areas.

One more comment, remember when Henderson was more commonly known as Hooterville? What about the Henderson Cloud? Time, effort, good planning by the city council, and quality development can remove the Northtown stigma as well. Henderson has just had a 15-20 year head start, which is just another reason I prefer my area of Henderson over the new areas of NLV.

Default Hooterville?

Who told you it is not called Hooterville? On the west side that is the standard name. Everybody kids about when your friendly industry is going to blow up removing Hooterville from the map.

More seriously the primary high school in north NLV is Shadow Ridge. Shadow Ridge is a better school by a substantial amount than Foothill. Mojave is pretty much an inner city school and serves south NLV and eastern CofLV. Basic is mildly better than Mojave but closer to it then Foothill.

There are two strong high schools in Henderson. But Coronado and GV are much better schools than Basic or Foothill. Note that two new high schools are coming on line in NLV both of which will likely be strong schools.

If you are going to Henderson for the schools than it has to be Coronado or GV. Otherwise you will do much better in north NLV.

We have a lot of car theft and home invasions due to the proximity of the 215 freeway here in Green Valley Ranch...Just pick up a copy of the South Valley News and it will tell you...
