Go back and view the census results. In my high school of 450 kids, there were 2 blacks and about 5 hispanics, everyone else was lily-white, and that was for an area covering half the county. But we sure did have some seedy white-trash ghettos in the town. They were just as rancid, raunchy and unsafe as any minority ghetto I've ever been in.
Ghetto is about class and lifestyle (or lack thereof). It can be applied to any race or nationality.

The northern part of NLV is interchangable with middle class Henderson and the middle class portions of the City of Las Vegas which are next to it and virtually identical in all meaningful parameters.
On a bang for the buck basis it is generally superior to anyplace on the south side. You get more house and as good or better schools for the same money.
Now if you are reasonably well off you don't need any of this. Head to any of the ritzy suburbs of Henderson or Summerlin or similar.
If however your are not taking home a few hundred thousand a year you may want to look at North Las Vegas. Certainly don't turn it down because RedWingFan does not like people of color...who can't afford that part of NLV anyway.

i didnt hear anyone mention skin color exept.... you. but schools arent better in the richer areas of valley. all schools here are in the toilet. thats why we got UNLV the extended high school for the valleys graduates. woohoo

My home in smoke ranch area of north l.v. was totally emptied in 3 hours. credit cards were spotted being used right away by the USELESS l.v.p.d. and I never heard another word from detectives until the case was closed 2 weeks later. also, I called at midnight feb. 24th, and the boys in blue, (las vegas's finest showed up at 3:40 a.m. the whole city is a joke to live in. expensive, crowded, un-organized, you name it. never again for me. I lost everything at 56 years old and moved immediately. I now live in iowa, so that should tell you whatit is like to live in l.v.

I think most of the cops there are in on it with the crooks, everywhere I went in Vegas, I ran into people begging for a "bump" of crack and crystal, heroin, you name it. right out in the open, where police patrol all the time. No one ever bothered them, even right in front of businesses and casinos, dep't. stores, you name it. It is the absolute armpit of the beautiful far southwest U.S.

And your insurance company said? Des Moines, Iowa has roughly the same burglarly rate as Las Vegas.

decent place to live
I did not read all the posts.
If you plan to move here check Summerlin. It is, as far as I can determine, one of the safer places to live.
Check "Wellington Meadows" and see if they have availability.

Also consider what areas you may have to drive THRU to get to those nicer parts of North Las Vegas - I'd stick with either Green Valley or Summerlin. North Las Vegas, including the 'newer/nicer' parts are just not my cup of tea.

I know you'd like to believe it is so, but it's simply not. North Las Vegas has always had a reputation of being a ghetto. Build as many nice houses as you would like and people will always talk about how it has/had a reputation of being a ghetto. You turned it into a race issue, not me. I said nothing about color, merely what people see the cities' reputation as.
Furthermore, even if you can afford to live in one of the nicer areas of NLV, you are just down the road from the ghetto part and may even drive through it to get to where you are going. Personally I wouldn't buy anywhere in NLV, not even where nice houses have been built.
Ask people that are natives or who have been there longer than olecapt and they will tell you that NLV has always had that reputation. I'm curious as to why you turned it into a race issue. Maybe you have underlying predjuce problems.

Red Wing - I have to agree with you - no matter what NLV does to reconstuct itself it will always be 'ghetto' in my mind as well. I simply would not relish having to drive through some areas just to get to my 'nice' area - some prefer to stick their head in the sand and scream racism rather than face the reality - it is what it is - like it or not - GHETTO - and I would not feel comfortable recommending NLV to any newcomer who comes on this board asking for help in find a nicer area to move into

you have to drive through some disgusting areas to get to Green Valley, actually most of older Green Valley is pretty disgusting, and I'd hardly say the newer part is nice...i actually lived there...
