Not sure about tuition, UNLV is facing some funding issues so it could be going up. As for basic living, etc $2k a month should cover it unless you plan on eating out everyday and partying a lot.

No worries, mate.
50K/9 mo. = 5.555K/mo.
None of what Vegas would consider extravagant relative to most places, but most middle class folks could stretch that out quite contently.
That's all I really mean by what you consider "fun".
My parents moved there about two years ago, and since then I've regularly met my friends there. The real estate market hit that area pretty hard, so right now a lot of empty houses' owners are just glad to get some money in rent while they hold out on their investment. Shopping around and haggling would be rewarding, I'm sure. Managing to build up a liquid savings of 50K, worst case says your friend at least has haggling in the blood.
And Vegas is a land of debt, if you will, so a good wit should find plenty of favorably tipped scales on your friend's budget. Your friend should be able to make many people happy and still come out of the deal happy, if you catch my drift.
Incidentally, what's the tuition?
