She's also a very nice lady....

Wow, that was actually rational and well-spoken. I was afraid it was going to be another misguided "Obama sux for offhandedly mentioning Vegas in the context of corporate spending, thereby ruining our entire economy and future" comment... but nay! It was addressing real concerns. Now I'm extra glad I voted for her!

in 2002, i went to visit DC and we looked her up, we met her, she gave us some passes to some places and had one of her assistants give us a tour of the Capitol Building, I dont know if all reps or senators do this, but we didn't even realize we lived in a different district and she still took care of us with these nice "perks"...

plus she is very prominent in the local Jewish community...

Shelly's been a comunity activist for many years. I first met her on some project back in about 1981 or '82 I believe.

The stupidity of what Obama said caused that group to have to pay $600,000 in cancelation penalties to Las Vegas, and then move their function to San Franciso where they paid more for rooms, food, and everything else.

I do have to admit though...talk about linguistic challenges.

If one had to listen to an argument betweely Berkley and Titus you would go insane from resetting from one regional version of English to another.

And neither makes any sense in the Nevada context.

Not to stir up trouble here, but it was the stupidity of the group that caused them to move to SF and pay whatever. I mean, Obama didn't make them not come to LV. He just used LV as an example of places that corporations at one point (frivolously?) sent people for fun. That statement was wildly misinterpreted by so many people, including that group that pulled their conference and has been blown way out of proportion b/c of people's reactions to it....

on the other hand, congresspeople lying about stimulus-related props for LV during debates on the floor is something that could literally change how budgets are made or bills are approved.... so her statement against that was very important.

I have no problems with corporations going to LV for "meetings". I do, however, have problems with corporations who ask (and receive) the US government for taxpayer bailout money...and then schedule these junkets in LV...or anywhere else, for that matter. Obama was right on with his statement, IMO. The only ones offended by it are some Las Vegans. The rest of the country was right with him on that one.

So you and the rest of the country favored moving it from Las Vegas to San Francisco at increased cost?

That is kind of strange. Why would you want them to spend more money?

From what I understood, they (Wells Fargo, if I remember correctly) already had offices located in SF. That would certainly cut some travel expenses, room expenses and meeting venue expenses down. Plus, they might get some real work done!

This kind of trip to LV...for a taxpayer-funded, bailed-out bank is a PR nightmare for Obama and the US Congress...who has to try and sell the bailout plan to the general public. Obama was 100% right to criticize it.
