Ahh empty and abandoned are quite different comcepts. And empty as well is wrong.

Vacant might work. Though we may have been the most vacant for a long time.

Las Vegas might be on this list for a few years. Detroit has been on it for decades and will continue to be for decades. Very different causes of their problems and very different solutions. Silicon Valley and Las Vegas have more in common than Detroit and Las Vegas.

What do Detroit, Las Vegas and Silicon Valley all have in common?

Answer: They were all built (at a very rapid pace) around one industry.

Canadians sometimes wander over - they count, right?

True, but the same can be said for nearly any medium sized city. Oil, exports, manufacturing, or tourism are commonly the single engines of most places.

Detroit has been dying a slow, bloody, death for half a century. It has no interest in changing its corrupt ways and has been mismanaged into oblivion.

Las Vegas and Silicon Valley are constantly trying to innovate, change the business, and willing to take risks. Intel and HP aren't the sole employers in the Valley. Las Vegas has moved beyond gaming to entertainment, dining, and shopping. Las Vegas will re-cast itself as a value destination after a decade selling itself as a luxury retreat.

Detroit is sitting around asking for corporate welfare, public welfare, and blaming everyone but themselves for the mess they made. They continue to have the same corrupt government and inept business leadership and fall further into 3rd world quasi-socialist status as a result.
