As a requirement to be in the Junior Honor Society my son needs to complete 25 hours of volunteer work by April 23. I have checked with animal shelters, and found out he is to young to volunteer with any of them. We are looking for things to do between April 6-22. I have checked with other places that said he is too young also.

I appreciate any suggestions.

He's old enough to join the Order of DeMolay. It's a group for young men between the ages of 12 to 21, where he can do good work, and learn leadership skills. It's related to the Mason's, and no, he doesn't have to be related to one. If interested, I can put you in touch with one of the adult advisers from the local chapter.

If Masons is not your thing ... I have nothing against Masons ... how about visits to nursing homes.

I know when my Mother was in one in NC, she was craving a visit from anyone. She said it was like prison. The staff is so low paid, well they aint exactly caring. He could play checkers, cards or read a book for them. Sometimes just a handshake or a hug with a little conversation can make a lonely day bareable.

I agree with both posters..very good ideas. If he can not volunteer for any organization, can he just help someone in the neighborhood? An elderly neighbor who needs their sidewalks swept, or garbage cans hosed out? Maybe someone needs a dog walker or some weeds pulled?

I like the idea of teaching a child to help...really will be something that stays with them for life.

If he likes animals, you could check with the Gilcrease Bird Sanctuary.

I almost joined the Civil Air Patrol when I was a kid, back in Napa, CA. A friend of mine was a member of the local Sea Scouts, who had their own ship, the Chaser Cat.

I think the Sea Scouts are here. I've seen them at the Nellis Air Show. There's adult programs for CAP also if you're still interested.

There's also two active flotillas for the Coast Guard Auxiliary on Lake Mead. As far as I know they do not have a cadet program though.

My hands are full enough with the Masons, and I'm not even involved with the appendant bodies, or the youth groups.
