I remember being there the night the lights on the Strip were dimmed and then went out in memory of Frank Sinatra.

Ah, but that's always been for a few minutes, not a whole hour. But you're right, it's something that tourists and no0bs wouldn't know or understand.

This tourist remembers that they shut off the LV strip lights after JFK (no not me) died. In fact, that may have been the first time LV dimmed the lights en masse.

But you've been here enough to become an honorary local.

Yes, especially since my birthday is June 22nd (44). I got an ad from some lawyer here in town saying that my house is supposed to be sold at auction on April 14th. I called them up, and the receptionist said that they got the date from the Clark County Recorder. I called them, and the person said they have no record of an upcoming sale. She recommended checking out the Nevada Legal News. I went to their site, but the charge, and since it's daily listings, I don't know what date to look for. I'm just praying that they're talking through their hat, and trying to get me to sign up with them. I don't want to have to leave until after I've found a job, and have received my money. I can crash on the couch at my sister's place, but I'd have to find someone who can watch my dogs for me.

Wasn't there a period in the 60's or 70's when there was big dealers' strike on the Strip, and several, if not all, casinos went dark for a few days? Or since it was the 60's did I hallucinate that? I think the hotels stayed open and eventually the managers took over and dealt the games??? Someone please tell me I didn't dream that.
Since JFK was whacked the year before I got here, the story was still fresh, and I was told about the casinos being roped off during the funeral. They said it wasn't a big loss since everyone was watching the funeral anyway.

Wouldn't it be nice if people could just appreciate that a group of people got together and made a gesture meant to remind us that we are all connected? No one is asking anyone to turn off your lights... it's just an interesting world experiment to get people to remember this thing we take for granted in our countries - electricity- and remember that we all impact each other. I get tired of all the cynicism and skepticism. IMHO, that is the attitude that got us into the mess we are in right now. How about we give the most appropriate response: "Cool. Does anyone have pictures of it from space?"
