Doggy Apartments
There are at least four apartment complexes that accept large dogs. They start at around $800. I know a couple of them which are livable.
Again there are lots of jobs here but generally not high end. Though cocktail waitresses here sometimes make a very nice living. Too do well in that area you need to be a "hottie".
As GBGuide says...think hard...Our streets are not paved with gold...

Get an education, get some training... plan, so that the life you create helps your kids.... Doesn't matter where you live.

Some good advice. One thing everyone should think of before moving to Vegas is how the lifestyle may effect them. The town feeds on human weaknesses - sex, drugs, gambling. If you are immature or have an addictive personality, stay away. I've heard way too many horror stories of lives destroyed by addictions here. However, if you can stay away from the casinos and strip clubs, the thriving economy allows for rapid advancement in most careers.

I remember getting snow in Vegas! It happened I think the second or third year that we lived there (around 1998 or so?). It was neat, I took pictures!

Hawaii to las Vegas?
Aloha from Waipahu, Hawaii. I've read all the posts on this blog and appreciate all the input. We have friends that moved to Vegas a few years ago. They keep returning to Hawaii and telling us how great it is but their facial expressions show otherwise. Yes they left to get out of the high cost of living in Hawaii. But they also lost their quality of life that they enjoyed on the islands; beach picnics year 'round in mild tropical weather. They won't admit this to us even though they have two kids in elementary school where the school system was described as "lower". We may have to make a similar move for financial reasons. Is it really that tough to make it in Vegas? The crime rate, car registration tax and others that the local news or commerce dept won't tell you. What's the real story?

Now im going to have to dissagree with most everyone else here. I have lived in Vegas for 6 months now and I love it! I moved from Michigan, and as most of you know, Michigan has the worst economy in the nation!!
Now i dont know where some of you are getting your facts from, like "vegas was rated worst in the country for crime 3 years in a row" ??? thats bull. I Was born in Flint michigan, raised in detroit and grew up in LA, vegas is safe beyond beliefe!
its a very well upkept town due to all of the visitors all the time. If your not used to people everywere all the time than this isnt the place for you.
currently though im liveing in a little gated community about 5 miles south of the strip called Rancho las Plamas, i pay 1300 a month for rent for my 3 bedroom, 2 bath house w/ a 1 car garage. I love it! the same house in michigan is just that if not more! And theres nothing to do in michigan! jobs are laying people off every day because they dont make any money, it horriable! Vegas will NEVER have that problem!
Now i of corse do not recomend rasing a family in "sin city" for many reasons, but come on, sex sells and it sells better than ever in las vegas.
So the choice is yours, but I live in vegas and i LOVE IT!!! iit cheeper than where i come from and the people are extreamly friendly and if your not a drunken jerk, you dont have to worry about getting jumped of mugged or robbed or whatever!
Vegas is the place to be!

I wasn't aware that Rancho Las Palmas was gated...I love the area, it is very nice with lots of shopping especially with groceries, convenience stores, pharmacies, and restaurants. I also like how it is so convenient to the Strip and the South Strip! I hope you enjoy living there! I also agree that relatively Las Vegas is a lot safer than some places in the East.

You have been there only 6 months and it's obvious that your still on your honeymoon period from all the optimism. Look up the statistics on crime and you will see that it IS indeed one of the most dangerous cities in the country. There is A LOT of crime in Detroit and Flint, but make no mistake in underestimating the amount of crime in Las Vegas.
I'm a Michigan native as well, all my family still livs there and I visit regularly. You are not correct in saying that Vegas is cheaper than Michigan. Not a chance. The economy is way better in Vegas, no doubt, because Michigan is on hard times right now. But houses in Vegas will cost you around $300k to get into a good neighborhood in a good area of town. In the better Detroit suburbs (Troy, Rochester Hills, etc.) you can get in there for around $225.
And I wouldn't say that Vegas will NEVER have the problem of laying people off like Michigan. The city is dependent upon large amounts of visitors and if they stop coming people will be laid off. All it would take is hard economic times in other cities, a recession, etc and it would see a big decline in visitors. People used to think the same thing about the Detroit area...people will always be buying cars so people will never be laid off. Things change.

We had big layoffs in 2001 because everyone was afraid to fly, put our camera business out of business because all of our customers were casino employees who were laid off...
