Vegas is not as bad as alot of people on here make it look. If it were truly one of the most dangerous cities in the country, i wouldn't be living here.
Those of us who live here know better. Ive been here about 10 years and ive never had a problem with crime of any kind. The worst thing that ever happened was when someone stole my trash container. lol I don't consider that a crime. If someone really wants an old smelly gross trash container that bad, let them have it.

Watch the news every year when the statistics are released from the previous year. Las Vegas always makes the top ten. You can do some research online to find that out as well.

You said - "Those of us who live here know better."

I lived there for almost 10 years and just moved away months ago. So I do know better. Maybe you have gotten lucky, maybe you are in one of the better areas with lower crime, but that doesn't mean that the statistics and rankings are wrong simply because you haven't personally been a victim of crime.

There are 99 cities in the US with police forces and population of over 200,000. Among those Las Vegas is 50th in violent crime rate. From the FBI 2005 crime statistics. It is roughly the median city.

It is well known however that facts don't bother some. They know what they know.

The exact data can be found at....

http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/05cius/data/table_08.html

Now that should put to bed once and for all the charge that Las Vegas crime is high. It is not. Right in the middle for US Cities.

Why do I suspect it won't go away?

I'm thinking you lived in a less desirable area so your experience probably wasn't as good as mine was/is.
If i would have been a newbie moving to Vegas and ended up in say Bonanza and Owens area, I would probably not have stayed long and then i might have come to the boards posting how terrible Vegas is. lol (ok, so i wouldn't do that, i would just move on already ) I wouldn't hold a grudge.

Hello, This is addressed to richkat........I lived in Vegas for a short 3 months. All the problems everyone listed are true. We moved back to Pennsylvania for my husbands job. I am looking to move to florida next year. I have lots of family in the St. Pete area but was wondering if you have any other info on living in Florida. I am a science teacher and would especially be interested in the schools.

Sorry if this is too off thread. I am completely new at this and am just figuring out the system.

It all depends on personal experiences...I know someone who lives at Pecos and Charleston for 17 years, and she has never experienced anything strange, despite what some people say. The point that I keep on saying is that everything is relative. You will find crime everywhere and usually it won't affect you if you don't get into the middle of it or cause a problem with somebody.

Dang, you are just smarter every day. You remind me of myself at your age. I was a smart kid too, still am.

I'm a little shocked and taken aback by some of the comments in this thread. I lived in Vegas during 2004 (granted a year is not a long time, bu nonethless...) and have a completely different take on Vegas. I lived in a sizeable one bedroom apartment in a non-gated community close to The Strip for under $800. I was single and living by myself and felt completely safe. I found the rent prices and general overall cost of living in Vegas to be rather cheap. Now, of course, the other places I have lived are NYC, Chicago, DC, and San Francisco, so by comparison almost every other place is probably going to seem cheap and safe to me. I have recently accepted a position that is now most likely going to be based out of Vegas (there was previous talk of it being based in Reno) and am thrilled (or at least I was) at the prospect of moving back to Vegas, especially now that I am married and my husband and I are looking to purchase a condo or house (condo and house prices in the Vegas area are FAR cheaper than everywhere else I've lived - so Vegas is a bargain to us).

Default Negativity

Vegas has not changed any since you lived here. It is just that these lists attract the negative. And some parts of the negativity have some limited truth. The schools, for instance, are not what I think they should be. But that is a comment I would make about virtually every city in the SW. I would also note that the middle class enclaves still do fine.

Some of it reflects the fact that Vegas is a blue collar city with entertainment, hotels and gambling being the industrial complex that fuels its economy. There is some strong feeling that this must be corrupt somehow or the other..just not as nice as say a good steel mill or a semiconductor plant.

I regularly sell homes here to retirees. I have now known many of them for years and virtually all have found it a comfortable and reasonable place to retire. A few find the heat intolerable but that is the only common reason why these folk are not happy here.

So take it all with a grain of salt. The vast majority of us live here happily and healthily with low if any fear of crime or other evil.

The area has a very nice climate and superb attractions. The only other place in the US where you can eat as well as NYC or SF. The shows are first class and everybody comes to town periodically.

The difference between you and the posters that always trash Vegas is you have a positive outlook on life. The others are probably not happy no matter where they go. You can be happy anywhere.
