That's because UNLV is generally a commuter college...meaning it's filled with locals who go home after school. That college feel you speak of exists when a college has a very large population of students who live on/around campus because they came from another state to be educated, and therefore make the surrounding area their hangout away from campus. Unfortunately students around the country are not eyeballing UNLV as the college they dream of attending. It's filled with your neighbor's kids.

That has been historically true, but it appears to be changing. There are new housing units opening on the northeast corner of campus due to the influx of out-of-state students. I suspect as the university continues to expand it's offerings (new med school is coming) we will see more and more of a mix of locals and non-locals.
