Moving to Las Vegas from South Carolina
My wife and I have our house on the market here in SC. I used to live in Las Vegas and left in 1999. We are looking at the area of 89142. It is near Sam Boyd stadium and Whitney. Anyway, how is this area presently? I know Las Vegas has crime, but how is it in this area? Also how is the medical care and education in NV overall? Our system sucks in SC. Our unemployment is 21%. I really do not need to work as I am on Social Security but someday I will return. But we just want to live somewhere we will be happy. The weather there will be as nice as ours, just warmer with no humidity. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks, Chris. Also, how are the real estate taxes?

the northern part of 89142 is better than the part around Sam Boyd...I really like the area, but it would have to be closer to Charleston for it to be nicer, in my opinion...
also there's plenty of shopping, but there's also plenty of traffic, have you driven around the area? i'd say the crime gets better as you get closer to the mountain...
education is terrible here...medical, we don't have more than 2 specialists for everything, but i would think that 2 is enough for some things...

Tons of info here: www.city-data.com/city/Las-Vegas-Nevada.html
I am on SS as well. My daughter lives in Spartanburg. I used to live there too. I would imagine the growth since 1999 will amaze you. You'd be better off looking to the NW.
If you gave more details on your housing needs, people here could be more specific in their responses. Most on this forum are very helpful. Good Luck.

Red Rock. That is good to hear you were from here. Well my housing is pretty straight forward. We have 5 kids from 1 year to 7 years. School is number 1. We are looking for a 4 bedroom home in a safe neighborhood that is close to shopping. When I lived in Vegas I used to live off Pecos, near Tropicana. I loved that neighborhood. We HAVE to live near a park for the kids because the back yards of Las Vegas are how do you say it, not what we have here in SC. The block walls aren't real friendly either, but we will deal with it. I personally will be looking for a specialist and good hospital to live near. I have Crohn's Disease and need constant care, so this is a real concern of mine. I am also wondering how the property taxes are? Are they good like they are here in SC? I will be doing more investigating real soon as we just reduced our house to get it sold quick and expect to be moving when school is over.

pecos and tropicana is still nice, but some of the shopping has moved over to Eastern/Russell for whatever reason...there's still nice restaurants and shopping over there and it is plenty safe as my family and i spend a lot of time in that area...
you may have an issue finding a 4 bedroom in that area as i think most of the homes are older and smaller and the bigger ones are usually the most expensive in that area...
again, education is a big issue here and since you have 5 kids, you will probably go through all of the issues the district has over and over again...

The link I gave above has lots of info, especially after you narrow your search.
The Las Vegas Realtors Association's site has a good search tool. www.lasvegasrealtor.com/propsearchpublic/Propertysearch.asp
I know the northwest like 89131 and 89149 have good schools and nice parks just by paying attention to this forum. There is a new hospital out that way, but I have no info on how it would relate to your condition. I have two realtor suggestions. mod cut: Or, if you'd like to DM me, I can give you info on the realtor who helped us. She was terrific. Prices here will surprise you, lower than you might think. I wish you well on getting yours sold. Good Luck and Welcome Back.

you'd probably want to stay south of Vegas Valley and east of Maryland or even Eastern...the issue with that area is that there are lots of apartment complexes and that's where most of the issues happen and then if they spill out of the complex...just try to look where there's no or little complexes, pecos and tropicana is a much better area than near vegas valley or sahara...
shopping is nearby either on Nellis or Pecos or Eastern or Maryland...
Sunrise Hospital is nearby and so is a lot of doctor's offices...
to get a better idea for crime, check out http://www.lvmpd.com/crimeviewcommunity/ you can input any corner in Las Vegas or unincorporated Las Vegas and see the crime...

That may be a bit harsh. There are plenty of good schools in Vegas, you just have to look in the right neighborhoods. And if one is still concerned, then there are always the private schools...
