There is indeed an Asian gang element in the valley. A close relative is A Metro Officer. His particular job is related to gang investigative work, so I guess he would know!!

It is then your thesis that the La Cosa Nostra is a street gang? that they terrify residents in poor Las Vegas neighborhoods?

Nope. Just posting something I read on KLAS. Thought it was funny that someone asked this question and that it happened to be on the news website.
I personally do not know of the gang situation in Vegas since I'm moving there next week. The only gang activity I've ever noticed in my life was when I lived in Tempe, AZ and we had gang writing on our alley wall. That freaked me out Here in Ohio, I know there are gangs, but I never see them because I know what areas to stay away from in Cleveland and Akron. So all I need to know is what areas in las Vegas to avoid too. Any advice on that?? Is Summerlin relatively gang free??

There are gangs and GANGS
Let us differentiate about what we are discussing. The classical street gang is a local organization that causes primarily local problems.
There are also vast involved international evil groups that collaborate in the commission of large scale crime.
When a person inquires about gangs that may recruit his asian son I presume he means local and not some international tong out of Hong Kong.
I am sure their are agents of the asian global gangs in Las Vegas. I am also sure they are not in the least interested in recruiting this guys son.

Summerlin did have the 311 Boyz, but they are basically disbanded, since most, if not all, are in jail. Everywhere has gangs, it just depends on who you hang out with and if you are into that lifestyle.

Do you have to comment on something you know nothing about. I personally Know guys in Jersey that collect for certain people and the mob is 1/50 as powerful as it was in the 50 and 60 If the mob went against the bloods or crips in Jersey they would have problems they have a hundred maybe soilders the gangs have thousands... so Yes

I wonder if the "Asian Gangs," mentioned above, are likely to be recruiting new kids from CA who are in a stable family situation and not living in a particularly bad area? From the posts here, it looks like Asians are mostly dispersed throughout the area. Where I live (northern Virginia) we have Hispanic gangs and they are mostly in a few areas where many new immigrants from Mexico and Central America are concentrated. The vast majority of kids of Hispanic origin are not in gangs and seem to work and study hard. I am Italian and Irish and never got into a gang when brought up in a nice part of New Jersey, even though we now know NJ is the home of the Sopranos! Nowadays the USA has gangs from Isreal, Russia, United States, and who knows where else. Start out living in a decent area and double your time with your kids, their schools, community, church etc so they see the positive side of life. There must be something good about Las Vegas, even though I am not too sure what after visiting it and reading these forums. :-) I am looking for a place to retire and have a young daughter, who is a school teacher, and son-in-law, who is a budding screen writer, thinking about moving to LV.

I don't think it has to do with decent areas, but how you raise your children and how involved you are.

It sounds like you are looking for an honest opinion of where to go and what areas to avoid, instead of the usual, "it's no worse here than other cities" nonsense. Of course there are "gangs everywhere" but that doesn't help someone who is moving to the area with children. It doesn't sound like you have much time to research what areas of town will best suit you and your family, so I would suggest that at first focus on the outskirts of the Las Vegas Valley. This includes the large Summerlin area, the far Northwest area, the far Southwest area, and many areas in Green Valley and Henderson. In Las Vegas, typically newer means safer (for awhile). This is a very transient town, so there are no guarantees that any area will be "safe" or free from gangs and crime, but if you play the percentages, you will most likely be safer in these areas. As a new resident, unfamiliar with the areas, avoid anything with North Las Vegas in the address, and anything on the east end of Las Vegas. Another rule of thumb, if you can't see open desert, then you haven't moved far enough away. The best bet is to check the Clark County School statistics for safer areas. The better the schools report card, most likely the better the area. If viewing these statistics doesn't scare you away, then welcome to Las Vegas!
