When are you coming out? I transferred my 9th grader there from Michigan and I did all the contacting before I got there. I received a packet of info before I got there and had it all filled out, made an appt to see her counselor and got her registered when we got there. Relatively easy process. (I am back in MI now, but not for too long hopefully!)

I did look into the zone variance situation and was basically told that you have to fill out a request for it and the reason why. I was told that they don't usually do it just because you heard the school was "bad". Plus, like olecapt said, many of the requested schools are already filled beyond capacity with the students that live in the zone. Yet, who knows how many use "grama's address".

Couldn't tell you about Basic HS. My daughter attended Coronado and it was just fine. Some aspects of it were better than the schools here in my area in MI and we are considered in a decent school district. I was not sure my daughter could cut it in one of the magnet schools and you had to apply before I knew when we were to relocate.

Good luck to you!

Carns75 is on a distinguished road
Thanks for all the info. I have not contacted the schools yet because I wasn't sure if I should wait or not. We will not be out there until July so I can't even go visit the schools or the counselors at the high schools. I'm not as worried about getting the elementary kids enrolled until the first part of August, but I was worried about getting my high schooler enrolled. I guess I should call both high schools tomorrow. I guess which ever school is more helpful will be a good sign. I've also thought about A-tech since he is wanting to get his degree in computer design and graphics, but I thought maybe it was too late to apply for magnet schools. Again, I need to just call the school! The 3 hour time difference isn't helpful when you work all day long!

Thanks again for all the input.

Actually, I find the time diff to be helpful. Well depending on your hours at work. If you get off at 5 pm it is only 2 there and you still have time to call.

Good luck!

Also take a look at the Tech Academies. The one on the SE should be convenient to you...

In the newspaper there was an ad stating that the Techs are still accepting apps and a few other schools are too...
