Question Desperately Need Info About 89015

I'm moving from a big East Coast city to be near my guy who lives in zip code 89015 in Henderson. (Don't worry---I'm almost prepared for the culture shock!) The problem is that when I've searched rental apartment ratings in that zip code on the web, every unit sounds like a roach-infested Section 8 disaster with slumlords as the manager. The reason for this is probably because only tenants with a beef post on ratings forums and satisfied tenants have no need to comment.
So, satisfied tenants, will some of you please give me a recommendation for livable complexes in 89015? Since I'm bringing a lot of furniture with me, I'd love to stay in one place for at least a year while getting acclimated and before investing in a condo. And in case you're wondering why I'm sort of limited to 89015, my friend lives in a house there and like many East Coasters accustomed to mass transit, I don't drive.
I'm fairly desperate because I want to move within the next few weeks. Any help, assistance, advice, information etc. will be truly, truly appreciated. Thanks....

I don't think there is great mass transit in 89015, if you want better access to bus routes and more frequent schedules, you need to look at zipcodes more NW of 89015...

Also, I can't even think of any livable complexes in 89015, then again I'm not too familiar with the area...I agree many people overreact on those apartment review sites because those who did have a terrible time make it sound 10 times worse...

Welcome to the board!

Congrats on the move! I think your best bet would be to look through Craigslist, and get a lot of pictures. 89015 includes the run down part of Old Henderson, and that is probably what you are running into. Others can give you more specifics on which areas to avoid.

As far as living in 89015 because you don't drive, I'm not sure that will work out. You will be virtually homebound. What if you need groceries? What if you have to go to the doctor? I guess you could always hitch a ride with your boyfriend, but that's a very difficult way to live. You should probably pinpoint his address on google maps, and then look into anything within a mile radius, so you can walk to his house and ask for a ride anywhere.

I'm not trying to be a downer, but I really do think you are overestimating the public transportation here. Especially out in Henderson (where 89015 is). I can't imagine trying to live without any way to get anywhere, unless you are an avid biker.

Thanks for the warm responses but I can learn to drive if I have to [SFX: rapid heart beats], so I'm less concerned with transportation than I am with safety and living conditions.

Here is a link to olecapt's crime map. The area codes near 89015 are safe too and often nicer. The problem you run into with 89015 is that it contains Old Henderson, which contains many old, run down areas.

Yeah, agreed. 89015 is all Old Henderson. The better parts of Henderson would be like the Green Valley area, 89074, or 89052....

I can't think of any apartment complex I would want to live in 89015. I'd live over in 89014 or 89012 which is very close by and has reasonable complexes. Las Palmas Entrada off Gibson and I-215 is a nice complex and that's right on the edge of 89015 and 89012. There are several nice apartment complexes in that area.

I'm guessing you want to live near your boyfriend since you don't drive? If that is the case then you need to give a little more info on cross streets of where your boyfriend lives since 89015 is large enough that not all areas will be within walking distance.

I agree that living without a car is not really an option in Henderson or Las Vegas. Mass transit is terrible. You'll be spending hours to get anywhere. Although, they do actually have a decent bicycle trail setup in Henderson, you can get quite a few places on dedicated bike paths.

There are a few workable condos in the area...off of racetrack. $850 to $1000. I don't know of a livable apartment complex in that area.

The thing is, I personally, wouldn't recommend ANY of the apartment complexes in 89015, you need to move over to 89012 or 89014, or even Green Valley at 89074 or 89052 to find anything that is recommendable. If you stay in 89015, expect a run down, older place. Unless you could give us some cross streets for the area in 89015 .... 89015 is fairly large.... I've lived out here my whole life, so I could definitely give you some direction. I was actually BORN in the 89015 zip code ... at St. Rose Hospital .... haha.
