Default Trying to find a furnished apt. (UNLV area is where I hear I should be.)

Im moving to Las Vegas. I recently wrecked my motorcycle so I dont have a vehicle right now. I am looking for an apartment that comes furnished. Hoping to find one close to a grocery store and other vital places. I have heard that being close to UNLV would be the best idea due to not having a vehicle. I should probably mention that I am 20 yrs old and also need to find a way to make friends so thats something to consider when I think about what area is best to live in. I plan on going all next week to look at places so any complexes that jump to mind id really appreciate suggestions and places to look. I have read a lot of post on here and am constantly searching but cant seem to find something solid yet. Btw my budget is roughly 1000 a month. Thanks for any and all help. I really appreciate it.

Just a heads up- the immediate areas (areas within walking distance) surrounding UNLV are not too desirable.
Although the campus itself is safe and attractive, walking to/from campus late in the evenings can be an uncomfortable trip. And the complexes/apts may be an uncomfortable living situation as well, depending on what you're used to.

Honestly, it's more a sense of security issue than an actual safety issue.

Your $1000/mth budget can find you a really nice place, however, even if you migrate farther from campus (driving distance 15 minutes): parts of Henderson (southeast of UNLV) and parts southwest of UNLV, for example. in addition to being safer and still not too far from campus, these areas are near plenty of grocery stores, stores, parks, restaurants.

As for finding a furnished apt., I don't know how successful you'll be with that.

The area immediately around UNLV isn't exactly desirable, but it isn't horrible either. You just have to be smart about safety. I'm female and lived on campus one semester and felt okay walking off campus to get to grocery stores and whatnot. It's doable.

And really, although the area isn't great, it probably is your best bet if you don't have a car.

Not sure about furnished apartments though. If all else fails, you can use a site like craigslist to see if someone's renting out a furnished room in their house/apartment.

I pretty much went through the same thing almost.

Save yourself the headache. There's no safe area around the strip. I saw a map on here with crimes and all the unlv/strip/surrounding areas are all the red zone.

Further parts Henderson are ok and so is Summerlin. They're pretty far. Def. can't walk.

So unless you're a really huge intimidating guy who carries a gun around good luck.

If you want an example of what i'm talking about check the Meridian.

Also crimeview on the lvpd website is useful.

When I moved to Las Vegas in 1991 I stayed at the Four Horizons apts on Harmon, about a block from UNLV. One of the cheapest in town at the time, I think $325 a month utils included. It's a furnished studio and you share the bathroom with your neighbor and the kitchen with three neighbors. I went by there a couple of years ago and it has not been improved. The neighborhood really isn't that scary as long as you stay aware and mind your own business. As a social person I think you would enjoy it, as the place was mostly students.

There are lots of apts in that area between Flamingo and Harmon and Maryland Pkwy and Eastern. Take a drive through the neighborhood and check it out.
