Default IT jobs in Las Vegas

Moved here from NYC and I am an experienced (10+years @fortune 500 companies) systems administrator, yet after two hard months of searching, I've come up dry.

Would anyone here with IT experience be able to offer some TIPS on finding a job here? Thanks in advance.

Start your own business in a non-IT field. That's what I did.

Seriously, the job market here isn't very good right now in general, and for IT jobs it's even worse. You may need to broaden your search and look outside of IT, unless you have enough money banked to wait until you find what you're looking for.

Well I have unemployment, but little else. If you don't mind me asking, what type of business did you start and what were your start up costs.?

Honestly rhodey, IT jobs were hard to come by before the economic downturn here, now, with things the way are, I'd think jobs in the IT field are even harder to obtain.

Maybe even changing your line of work might work now...if you can get a job and survive. You can apply for several different types of casino work...maybe even food handler, waitstaff, etc....anything to help pay the bills and possibly get yourself some benefits while you continue to secure an IT job. Unemployment won't last forever.

Good luck with whatever you do!

Before you moved from NY did you network and make any contacts? I'm asking because I find that having contacts to get that proverbial "foot in the door" is key in this city. Another option is to hookup with an IT consulting firm and get a contract assignment. This gives a potential employer an opportunity to see if things will work out and may lead to FT employment.

To be honest, high-level IT jobs in the valley are hard to come by. I'm not saying they don't exist but I'm not surprised to read about your long search. Something else to consider is that even if you score a job, you may be a bit disappointed about the pay scale. Jobs that can easily pay 6 figures in NY or CA will not come close to the same $$$ here unless the person has proven skills or is able to branch into consulting...

hmmm...might have been better to take a leave from the big fortune 500 company in NYC using the FMLA law? It would have protected your position while you care for your loved one.

Default What to do

1.) Network in Las Vegas it's who you know not what you know.
2.) Work below you means. Most places promote you.
3.) UNSOM(Medschool Associates South) is hiring.
4.) Call Kelly services give them your resume and ask to get an interview with DRC. I might be able to help you with a temporary gig for a few weeks but at least you can get a refrence. These are key in Vegas.
