9 out of 10 people having jobs doesn't equate to having a 90% chance of finding work.
Those 90% are holding on for dear life.

I agree with Soundman. Any person moving to Las Vegas expecting to find work is unrealistic.

Well in the existing climate anyone with a job or a good shot at one simply should not move.
However for someone in a bad area of CA? Tougher.
There are places that are actually much worse...so moving to Las Vegas may be a step up.
I do admit however that if it were me I would go to Phoenix at this point in time.
Of course as soon as things looked up a bit...I would run to Vegas.

Utah has a very diverse economy, and there is not one industry that dominates the employment picture. Many employers are drawn to Utah by the low wages (Utah's colleges graduate a lot of students). While things are not great here, it's much worse in other places (like Nevada). I moved to Nevada approximately 1 year ago, but got laid off 3 months into my new job. I was able to find a similar position (at 15 percent less pay) in Utah. And yes, it does get maddening with the "other" government in charge!

The differences in rates are pretty much just a reflection on how much employment exists for the various types of work in each area. I would guess if you went to a city in any state in the west right now your chances of being employed are about the same because it is all based on what your skills are. An unemployed construction worker here is probably going to be an unemployed construction worker in Salt Lake or Portland. An employed brain surgeon in any city will surely find a job in another.

This is a very serious situation, the 11.2 % unemployed are the documented unemployed, it does not take into consideration the folks who's umemployment ran out . Local analysts say it maybe closer to 20% unemployment in Nevada.
This not a time to panick but to buckle down and work harder and smarter than you ever have before . If you don't have a job and are looking you have to make sure you have your act together and have a current resume, a look proffessional no matter what kind of job you are looking for.
You have to make yourself stand out.
Maybe Vegas isn't the place for you it's times like these that bring families together and if it means moving back home with family in order to get through this , there is an option. You have plans what your going to do with your future and just waiting for things to happen and blaming the economy isn't the way to do it. You have go out and make your destiny.

No matter what you do; the fact remain, there are not many jobs here. Those people that have jobs are in FEAR of losing them. The recession is bad for the world but it is a whole lot worser in Las Vegas. We all see it!!
My investment manager that works for ML says its going to take at least 7 years before Vegas recovers. That is a long time for anyone. I am better off just dropping my home and moving back to California.

Good point(s). I'm not even going to the Employment Commission (if that's what it is called here) and register because I'm not eligible for benefits at this time. I am looking for work, however I know going to their office would be a big hassle not worth the time. Count me as uncounted.

And two of the places much worse than Las Vegas are California and Oregon. And Las Vegas will recover first.
Vegas is simply further along into the problem and will start to get better as we get into 2010 and City Center and others come on line.
No miracles. We simply took it in the teeth up front. Our residental construction industry went away in 2007 and will start to come back in 2010. As financing finally begins to ease a number of projects on hold will pick up again.

If you are a doctor, nurse, nurse practitioner, or a physician's assistant there are jobs available in Las Vegas.
