Hello ..I am 30 yrs old and a server/bartender since the age of 16..bartending since 18..I have an assoc. in criminal justice and working on a medical transcript. certificate. My husband has been a Restaurant/Banquet manager..so we both work in the hospitality industry. We are currently living in Michigan, and are thinking of moving to Vegas by the end of 09. We plan on visiting again in Sept. for 3 weeks to try and find some employment and apartments. Where are the best places to look for work..( not seedy..not horrible tips..) and the best gated apartment complexes? Please let me know what you think. Thanks to all..

The good news is that even in this economy there are still jobs in the hospitality field. The best places will be the chains like Station Casinos, MGM Grand, Harrah's, etc. If you have searched the previous threads, it will be difficult but not impossible to get a job without having a residence secured.

Plenty of good apartment complexes all over, you don't really need the gated community. However, when I moved here I rented a townhouse in Painted Desert for the same price as an apartment that was in a guard gated community. Really nice community that fronted the golf course.

I would suggest if you haven't already done so to spend a week here in July or August to see if you both will tolerate the extreme heat since you are experiencing the the other extreme of snow and ice. Good Luck!

thanx for the feedback,,we just booked a flight for a weeks visit at the end of August for a week. Reading all of these threads has made us rethink moving to vegas..the employment aspect of the move is kinda scary. We do have jobs here..still in the service industry..and we do make good money here in Michigan..Our rent is only 480/mo. including everything minus cable. Just seems like we're moving nowhere fast here. Looking to relocate..and soon.

Wow that is low for a rent amount. Not to say you won't find it here, but it will be in a less desirable area. Things are tough here, I won't lie to you but you can get jobs if you're persistent.

Good luck with whatever you decide on

Metro (the police department) is recruiting, I believe. With the criminal justice background, you could maybe look into that....

We came here from MI last year. My husband had a job here already so that part was the easy part. We found a nice apt, in a nice area (Henderson) but we paid over $1000. a mo. There are cheaper ones and cheaper, but just as nice or nicer, areas. I moved back with my daughter 6 mos later (long story) but we just bought a home here in Centennial Hills. I am here for the summer and I love it. I do not like MI weather AT ALL. My family and other children are there though.

Anyway, my point is that it depends on what you are looking for. We love the heat, the atmosphere here, the people are far more kind than in MI (suburb of Detroit), we just love everything about living here. There was a couple we got to know in our complex who moved here from MI and had tons of experience in the service industry (no gaming, though, and that hurt them)and did not find jobs for 6 months. The jobs they found they didn't feel measured up to what they left in MI and they were a bit homesick. They did have a good amt of savings when they came here.

They moved back to MI before their year was up. They are happier, I believe, although they miss the weather here.

Good luck and at the very least have fun on your visit!!!

Hey there...I have been bartending here in Vegas for the last 10 years...I would be happy to answer any questions you may have. This is by far the best city in the world to bartend in. You either want to get a union job or even better a job in a local gaming bar (with video poker machines). The locals out here are unreal tippers. Usually 10% of their winings if they like you. So if you pay someone out a $4000 jackpot it is likely they are gonna slide a 300-400 tip across the bar. A typical shift in a good gaming bar you should make between 500-700. Now a bad way to make $150K a year cash. Just dont get caught up in the Vegas lifestyle and make sure you go out a lot and visit other bartenders and tip well. 1 drink you should leave a $40 tip...believe me it will come back to you.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
