You have a blessed day, Mam

How many of us on this forum actually went to grade school in Vegas? Most of us are transplants from somewhere else, which means we were educated from a different school system.

True enough. But that doesn't fit the argument that's being proferred.

Look, LV is a unique and special place...no place else like it in the world..it has many good qualities and some negative aspects.

There 50 states in the Union. Why is it so hard to accept that some will rank near the top in certain things and others will be at the bottom

Don't be so parochial..embrace the truth.

If you said I was an unemployed non college educated somewhat socially awkward smuck without a hand I would say that you are correct. No harm in the truth.

"The Dumbest State: Nevada

they also have a terrible education system.

Nevada had the worst public school system in the country,

the problem was not the amount of money spent on education, but rather where that money went.

By the time a child takes the NAEP fourth-grade reading exam, Nevada has spent more than $40,000 on that child's education,” the institute wrote. Unfortunately, Nevada is still struggling to get it right. The governor recently announced plans for cuts in education spending."

The Dumbest States in America - MainStreet
The article that Datafeed posted pretty much says that Nevadans are dumb because of their troubled school system. Nevada has thousands of people moving to the state(especially Las Vegas) every year from around the country and world. Besides the transplants having children in school, how does a terrrible school system affect someone that has never stepped foot in a CCSD classroom? How can the two even be related? If this is the only gauge the site is using then it really can not make the claim. What about all the kids in school now who will most like be moving to a new location because of their parents and vise versa. Last year my daughter's class received about 10 new students in her class alone. Lost about 7.

The "dumb gauge by public schools" makes sense for areas where you have generations of families that lived in a city as far back as anyone could remember. For example; I had several teachers in high school that were actually born and raised in Savannah. They went to the same exact high school that they were teaching at. AND, their parents went to the same exact high school or one nearby. This would be a very rare case in Las Vegas.

We all are dumb by association.

I understand, and you're right.

But we're presented with the "Nevadans are dumb" argument over and over and over despite any factors raised that might be contrary to or mitigate that statement. Oh well. There's debate, and there's insistence ... such as stating that if you don't agree, you're parochial. Or if you're a female Las Vegan, you're likely none too bright. Or if you're a Nevadan ...

Gets a little too troll-ie for me. I can't imagine thinking so little of my fellow man that I would sail around forums posting stuff like that.

Yes, we are all dumb by association.

The paucity of education in Nevada--both secondary and university level-- is undoubtedly a large factor in the dumbness of the state but by no means is it the sole reason for it.

The reason why education is atrocious is of minimal import to this discussion;what's relevant is that the schools generally suck. Excuses are irrelevant.

If your daughter had ten new students in her class it means that the teacher is likely teaching to the lowest common denominator. You are a good dad so your efforts help to mitigate this but it still has a very negative impact on the education of the kids (and your child).

The state's public universities are good for little more than turning out croupiers and the like. This is what a state school is supposed to do: educate and prepare the masses for the local employment market.

Education is not valued in Las Vegas. I have heard this time and time again. Being a casino host, card dealer, server, real estate agent, stripper, valet, line cook, etc does not require education past the 6th grade.

i am not saying a good chef is not immensely talented or the front desk manager at the Cosmo (the suits as some call them) is not smart. But their jobs don't require higher level education or above average cognitive ability.

That's wonderful...call someone a troll who you don't agree with.

or better yet call someone a troll for stating facts...yes facts...that are uncomfortable.

Is there a faded Sharon Angle bumpersticker on you car?

Wonderful.

i am sure the ad hominem attacks will follow...as passive aggressive as they may be.

That being said, these threads do stray quite a bit from their original purpose. I feel bad about this.

I never understand what a troll is. It's the net. If I said I was a 34 year old single mother asking about employment prospects and a nice place to live on 700 a month would it alter the replies posted in any way?

I would rather have discussions about CCSD than answering questions about safe, new, affordable places to live over and over and over and over and over again. This thread(or its direction) is just a little fresh air from the monotonous threads we usually have.

You cant blame the kids;it's the fault of the parents but it's hard to criticize them for it.

the parents are likely so busy making ends meet or working odd hours that they don't have time to be involved in their children's education.

this is what starts this awful cycle...but then again if the parents don't (or can't) care there is not much that the schools can do...the students produced will be deficient.

back to my original point: education is not highly valued--for whatever reason--in the state.
