Hmmmm. Let's see now...There are a zillion parks, and some where the kids can fish and ride horses, play in the water attractions. There is the Springs Preserve, the Museum of Natural History, Lied Library with all it's kids activities, other libraries have family oriented activities like art shows, free performances by entertainers and story tellers all the time. There is snow skiing at Mt. Charleston, and in the same afternoon they can go water skiing, or boating, or scuba diving, or snorkeling, or catch a board fish, or hunt ducks, at Lake Mead. Speaking of hunting, they can go duck or goose, or quail, or dove, or turkey hunting, deer or elk hunting, rabbit hunting, coyote or mountain lion hunting, and if lucky enough to get a tag, desert big horn sheep hunting. They can ice skate on the hottest days and roller skate indoors or out. There is a snow board park at Mt. Charleston, and skateboard parks all over town. There must be 100 soccer fields, and 200 softball/baseball/football fields; not to mention all the tennis courts. UNLV and other venues put on plays, ballet, symphony music, charitable events, Chautauqua. Kids can play outside, ride their bikes, whatever kids do, 365 days a year in the greatest weather on earth. They have more opportunity than any other kids in the country outside of LA to go to shows like Lion King, Disney on Ice, Harlem Globe Trotters, circuses, big name concerts, indoor and outdoor theme parks, traveling carnivals, semi-professional baseball and hockey, exhibition professional sports of all kinds. They can do world class mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking, back packing, camping, play any and all sports, and find leagues for them all including such things as fencing and Lacrosse. There are festivals like San Gennaro (2 x per year), Greek Festival, Art in the Park, Henderson Harvest Festival, Helldorado, Art Festivals all over the place, even craft shows at Cashman Center. And let's not forget First Fridays downtown. I could go on, but you get the idea. The truth is, kids here are spoiled with all the stuff there is to do. Las Vegas kids become more sophisticated and develop a snooty attitude towards kids from other cities because it is those kids that have nothing to do.

I read your post fine and Buzz, Olecapt and I responded showing how incorrect your statement is from our standpoint. For the record, we've been here 2 years now and I post strictly on what I experience here as a resident whether it's activities for my family, restaurant experiences, casino experiences, my wife's employment as a BJ dealer, etc. I don't claim to be an expert on Vegas; however, I definately know the difference on posting using emotion versus being objective and rational. Everybody has a right to an opinion; however, if you are going to post disparaging remarks about Vegas, you better have facts to back them up because I will prove otherwise.

Unless I missed something, I've seen you provide no facts/sources. Two years as a Vegas resident counts for very little when you are discussing "growing up" in Vegas. Try asking a teenager what its like growing up in Vegas, better yet, try going from a teenager to an adult in Vegas. As I stated, the public school system is awful, kids can't afford to attend many vegas shows, and those lovely "free" library activities will entertain kids until they are about 13.

A previous poster said you can fish in Vegas... where is that?

UNLV and other venues put on plays, ballet, symphony music, charitable events, Chautauqua (What kid likes those things?). Kids can play outside, ride their bikes, whatever kids do, 365 days a year in the greatest weather on earth (120 in the summer and 45 in the winter... ) . They have more opportunity than any other kids in the country outside of LA to go to shows like Lion King (How many of those can you afford to take your kids to?), Disney on Ice, Harlem Globe Trotters, circuses, big name concerts (you can find those and better ones in cities more suited to child development), indoor and outdoor theme parks (One theme park...), traveling carnivals, semi-professional baseball and hockey, exhibition professional sports of all kinds.

I never said Vegas was a bad place. I simply said its not a good place to raise kids.

You must not be a parent because you just don't get it.

And obviously you have a reading comprehension problem since I have explained over and over how my kids thrive in this area plus should I mention that we go to Las Vegas Mini Gran Prix or King Putt Indoor Putt-Putt, maybe the rides over at Circus Circus. Should I continue or are you that obtuse????

I guess I should ask all those teenagers working at the YMCA, the theatres in town, or different restaurants when they will turn to lives of crime since there is "nothing" to do.

Obviously my 2 years shows more than you will ever know.

Actually the only thing you are roughly right about is that Las Vegas is hard on teenagers...particularly the older ones. It is a town where the underage get a very hard time.

Las Vegas is a very large school system. As such it is better than NYC or LA or Washington DC. It in fact does a little better than the similar sized districts.

The standard US proposition of breaking up into little school system while leaving all the detrius in some large central system never happened here. So it is somewhat more homogeneous than many school systems.

On the other hand the good schools of Summerlin and Henderson and such are right up there wit the good suburban systems elsewhere. I will agree the central city schools stink...but that is how it is always in big school systems. And in fact the weakness of CCSD is in those central schools.

Once again, you don't have to spend money to educate kids. I guess you never heard of Spring Preserve

So since you are so smart, why don't you give a specific example of an better activity suited to child development.

Otherwise you need to follow the face

And that is what I've been getting at-- Teenagers. The ass who has lived in Vegas for 2 years, with a couple of 5-year-olds doesn't understand that. Maybe I didn't say teenagers enough.
