Hi everyone,

What's the deal with the street performers? We were there in August of 2009 and nary a street performer to be found. Now, through reading the LVRJ daily and watching the couple of Vegas themed TV shows (Vegas Strip, Las Vegas Jailhouse) it appears that there is a great number of street performers along the strip.

My questions are: Are they troublesome? Do they take up space in front of any particular hotel? We were looking to stay at the Planet Hollywood and incidentally, it looks like there are a lot in front of that property.

Are they more or less annoying than the escort card smackers? Those guys/girls don't bother me.

I know that it seems sort of silly to ask about them, I'm just trying to gauge the overall changes to our vacation place since our last visit.

Thanks for your help.

As with most places, the buskers (street performers) get run off by the city because they're making money without buying any business licenses, paying rent, or in other ways enriching the public coffers. The way code enforcement looks at it, busking is just begging with a nice costume and a little bit of charisma.

Why colorful people who make the strip more entertaining get run off, while the porn-slappers get to stay leads me to believe that someone's palms are getting greased.

LOL I was being facetious but in actuality [since you edited your post] there is ,suprisingly, very little problem from the performers.....a few growing pains as they learn that we aren't like LA....

There have been several downtown that have actually been quite good....
A couple of weeks ago there was a 'kicka$$'' little rock combo of KIDS playing on the street on Saturday night.

and I say this after being one of the CRITICS of allowing street performers here.

Depends on what part of the strip you went to. In front of the M&M store, TI casino and downtown Fremont Experience is where I see the most street performers. Probably because these areas have the potential to draw kids to beg their parents to take a pic with their favorite character. Also, the time of the day matters too. Cant go too early or too late. Hardly ever saw any performers after midnight. The kids are usually sleep and people are too drunk to take a person in a costume serious during this time. Also consider the weather or any major event that just left, in town or coming soon.

Fremont area usually has the biggest concentration of people looking to make a quick buck in costumes mixed with those that take their costume performing craft serious. I have seen some to look at it as a full time job.

There was an article in the LVRJ about how he casinos and metro were going to start cracking down on the street performers. Something to do with the safety of the tourists and the performers not being registered. Maybe metro is making it hot for them right now.

One more thing...There are hundreds of various styles of what a "street performer" looks like. Some are blatant(probably what you were looking for)...

Other times they can catch you off guard...

From what I've seen the intrusion of street performers tends to go through cycles. The cops (usually after complaints from businesses) will clamp down when things get out of hand. That simply leads to the performers going to another area - until they get moved on from there and the cycle starts again.

This past holiday season the cops were more aggressive than usual. They were actively moving the performers from the high traffic sidewalk areas on The Strip. One cop in a car was on a bullhorn warning performers to move or be cited. And, in the days leading up to New Year's I noticed significantly fewer performers on Fremont Street due to similar treatment.

I was thinking of the performers as an extension of the ones in Hollywood. I don't know exactly what I was thinking as far as their intrusiveness but I was curious more than anything. Thanks for the replies.

The dude with his hand on the wall is pretty impressive no matter how you look at it....

Thanks again.

Yes...but the cops could have also been street-performers...in cop costumes.
